The steel sheet has a composition containing C: 0.02% to less than 0.10%, Si: less than 0.3%, Mn: less than 1.0%, P: 0.10% or less, S: 0.020% or less, Al: 0.01% to 0.10%, N: 0.010% or less, and Nb: 0.003% to less than 0.070% on a mass basis, the remainder being Fe and inevitable impurities. A steel microstructure of the steel sheet contains ferrite: 90% or more and a total of pearlite, martensite, retained austenite, and cementite: 0% to 10% on an area fraction basis, in which the average grain size of the ferrite is 15.0 μm or less, and in which the average aspect ratio of the ferrite is 1.2 or more; and a tensile strength of 500 MPa or less.

By first fluxing a steel long product with novel specific flux compositions, it is possible to continuously produce, more uniform, smoother and void-free galvanized coatings on such steel long products in a single hot dip galvanization step making use of zinc-aluminum alloys or zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloys with less than 95 wt. % zinc. This is achieved by providing specific amounts of lead chloride and tin chloride in a flux composition comprising (a) more than 40 and less than 70 weight % zinc chloride, (b) from 10 to 30 weight % ammonium chloride, (c) more than 6 and less than 30 weight % of a set of at least two alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorides.

In the high-strength steel sheet, the C content is 0.15% or less, the area ratio of ferrite is 8% to 45%, the area ratio of martensite is 55% to 85%, the proportion of martensite grains adjacent to only ferrite grains in the entire microstructure is 15% or less, the average crystal grain sizes of ferrite and martensite are each 10 μm or less, and the area ratio of ferrite grains having a size of 10 μm or more to all the ferrite grains included in a portion of the steel sheet which extends from 20 to 100 μm below the surface thereof is less than 5%.

A hot-dip plating apparatus for plating a thin molten solder film can control a film thickness of a molten solder on a base material evenly and in increments of a few μm and achieve a thin-film solder plating having a film thickness less than a conventional system. As shown in FIG. 1, this apparatus comprises a solder bath 17 of accommodating the molten solder 7; a second conveying section 23 for drawing up a strip member 31 from the solder bath; and a blower section 19 for blowing hot gas on the strip member 31 immediately after being drawn up from the solder bath by a second conveying section 23; the hot gas having a predetermined flow volume and a predetermined temperature equal to or higher than a melting temperature of the molten solder 7. According to this configuration, the excess molten solder 7 can be trimmed from the strip member 31 corresponding to composition of the molten solder 7. Thus, the film thickness of the molten solder 7 coated on the strip member 31 can be controlled evenly and in increments of a few μm.
