In addition, the compounds of the formula I, in which R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 and also Q have the given meanings, are suitable for use as valuable intermediates for the preparation of medicaments, in particular of inhibitors of the cellular Na.sup.+ /H.sup.+ antiporter.

According to the process, an aqueous solution of an alcohol is contacted with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of an effective amount of a copper catalyst that contains from about 50 parts per million to about 10,000 parts per million of an element selected from the group consisting of chromium, titanium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, vanadium, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, cobalt, nickel and mixtures thereof. Raney copper is preferred.

A method of melt granulation for powdery material is disclosed wherein the powdery material is discharged onto the upper surface of a heated rotary spreader for migration under centrifugal force to the periphery of the spreader accompanying by melting of a portion of the material and enrobing of non-melted particles by the melted material for discharge as enlarged granules from the periphery of the spreader. To improve the quality of the granules produced, the feed material is supplied to the spreader at two separate locations. The first location is the central portion of the spreader to provide the melted material and the second location is adjacent to the periphery of the spreader. The spreader is preferably in the form of a concave bowl or inverted truncated cone or dish. Feed material is supplied to the first location by a screw feeder extending down the side of the dish and at the second location by a rotary vaned distributor located within the dish which radially flings the feed material onto the inclined dish wall. The process and apparatus is particularly useful for the production of non-sticky granules which are difficult to form when a single central feed of material is used.

A process for the purification of crude benzoic acid obtained by the catalytic oxidation of toluene in the liquid phase, which is contaminated with impurities including phthalic acid and benzylbenzoate, the process involves distilling the crude benzoic acid in a first distillation in the presence of an aliphatic amine or a mixture of aliphatic amines of the formulaHNR.sup.1 R.sup.2whereinR.sup.1 represents hydrogen or a straight-chain or branched hydroxyalkyl or aminoalkyl radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms andR.sup.2 represents a straight-chain or branched hydroxyalkyl or aminoalkyl radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms,and/or the salts of these amines, recovering from this distillation (a) a purified benzoic acid and (b) a benzylbenzoate containing residue, working up the residue by a second distillation and chlorinating the distillate resulting from this second distillation to give a benzoylchloride virtually free of benzonitrile.
