A base oil for a lubricating oil and a lubricating oil composition containing said base oil, which are to be used in a mechanical apparatus with an orifice mechanism, are disclosed. The base oil has a kinematic viscosity at 40.degree. C. or 3 to 500 cSt, a pour point of -25.degree. C. or lower and a cloud point of -25.degree. C. or lower. The lubricating oil composition contains as major components (A) the above base oil and (B) at least one additive selected from a viscosity index improver, a pour point depressant, an extreme pressure agent, an anti-wear agent, an oiliness agent and an antioxidant. The base oil and the lubricating oil composition are excellent in working properties at low temperatures and thus can be effectively used in a mechanical apparatus with an orifice mechanism, particularly to be used at low temperatures.

A lubricating oil composition having improved temperature characteristics is disclosed, containing: (A) a base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100.degree. C. of 1.5 to 50 cSt, a pour point of -25.degree. C. or lower and a viscosity index of at least 60; (B) an ethylene-.alpha.-olefin copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 8,000; and (C) at least one additive selected from an extreme pressure agent, an anti-wear agent, an oiliness agent and a detergent dispersant. The present composition has a high viscosity index and exhibits good temperature characteristics, particularly low temperature characteristics, and further is excellent in shear stability, extreme pressure properties, wear resistance, detergency and so on. Thus it is useful as a gear oil for cars or industrial machines, an internal combustion engine oil, an automatic transmission oil and so on.

The invention is a composition for coating surfaces with a thin film containing fluoropolymer particles, a method for producing this composition, as well as a method for applying it to a surface. More particularly, the composition includes a carrier lubricant, such as mineral oil, which has particles of a fluoropolymer, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, well dispersed within it. A solvent, such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is blended with the fluoropolymer containing carrier lubricant, most preferably in a one to one ratio. The result is a low viscosity dispersion of the carrier lubricant, which itself has a dispersion of the fluoropolymer particles. When the composition is applied to a surface, the lowered viscosity aids in obtaining a thinner film of the lubricant and also enhances the penetration of the lubricant into the surface. Advantageously, the solvent is allowed to evaporate from the surface, thus leaving an even thinner film of the lubricant. Also, the evaporation of the solvent returns the lubricant to a higher viscosity which is better retained on the surface. Preferably, the lubricant also contains a phosphate ester, such as tricresyl phosphate, which is thought to aid in dispersing the fluoropolymer particles in the lubricant, and in attaching the fluoropolymer particles to the surface.

The invention is a composition for coating surfaces with a thin film containing fluoropolymer particles, a method for producing this composition, as well as a method for applying it to a surface. More particularly, the composition includes a carrier medium, such as a synthetic base stock, which has particles of a fluoropolymer, such as ground and sintered polytetrafluoroethylene, well dispersed within it. A solvent, such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is blended with the fluoropolymer containing carrier medium, most preferably in either a 32 to 1 ratio or an 8 to 1 ratio. The result is a low viscosity dispersion of the carrier medium, which itself has a dispersion of the fluoropolymer particles. When the composition is applied to a surface, the lowered viscosity aids in obtaining a thinner film of the grease and also enhances the penetration of the fluoropolymer particles into the surface. Advantageously, the solvent is allowed to evaporate from the surface, thus leaving an even thinner film of the grease. Also, the evaporation of the solvent returns the grease to a higher viscosity which is better retained on the surface. Preferably, the grease also contains a phosphate ester, such as tricresyl phosphate, which is thought to aid in dispersing the fluoropolymer particles in the grease, and in attaching the fluoropolymer particles to the surface.

Herein disclosed is a dry type continuous wire drawing process which can retain satisfactory working circumstances while eliminating the problem of disposal of waste liquids. The wire drawing process includes the steps of descaling a wire to be drawn, coating the descaled wire with a lubricant, and drawing the lubricant-coated wire through a drawing die. The descaling step is conducted in a mechanical manner. At the lubricant coating step, the descaled wire is once coated with lime powder and then with metallic soap powder. Thus. the three steps recited are conducted under dry and continuous conditions. At the lubricant coating step, the lime-coated wire may be coated with powder of sodium stearate before it is coated with the metallic soap.

A polymer-coated particulate inorganic material, e.g. graphite, graphite fluoride or molybdenum disulfide, is obtained by preparing a reaction system containing a liquid medium, fine particles of the inorganic material, at least one vinylic monomer which undergoes radical polymerization or copolymerization and a polymerization initiator and allowing the vinylic monomer(s) in the reaction system to undergo polymerization and to bond to the surfaces of the inorganic material particles by graft polymerization. To enhance the efficiency of graft polymerization to thereby realize uniform coating even when the inorganic material is very low in surface energy as typified by graphite fluoride, the pH of the reaction system is adjusted to a value ranging from 5 to 9 by adding alkali to the reaction system soon after the addition of the polymerization initiator or alternatively by treating the inorganic material with alkali in advance of preparation of the reaction system. The polymer-coated inorganic material can easily be shaped into a solid body by compacting, optionally with addition of a synthetic resin.
