Abstract: Shape memory polymers (SMP) based on poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) in the presence of 2-carboxyethyl acrylate oligomers (CEA), multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and cross linked by ionizing radiation were investigated. Chemical crosslinking by glutaraldehyde for PVA in the presence of CEA and MWCNTs was also studied. Radiation cross linked SMP exhibits good temperature responsive shape memory behavior as demonstrated by thermal properties of radiation investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis. Transition temperature at Tan δ of radiation cross linked SMP decreased significantly by 6 and 13° C. due to addition of MWCNTs. The developed SMP exhibited promising shape memory behavior of radiation cross linked SMP for biomedical applications between temperatures range of Tan δ. Results on the gel fraction revealed significant reduction in swelling and increase in gelation due to chemical cross linking with glutaraldehyde. The radiation cross linked SMP reached 100% gelation at an irradiation dose of 50 kGy.

Abstract: An article of apparel may include a torso region with a front area, a back area, and a pair of side areas. At least a portion of each of the side areas are formed from a material with (a) a first air permeability when unexposed to water and (b) a second air permeability when exposed to water. The first air permeability may be less than 279 cm3/second per cm2 measured in accordance with ASTM D 737, and the second air permeability may be greater than 279 cm3/second per cm2 measured in accordance with ASTM D 737. In some configurations, at least a portion of the back area may be formed from the material. The article of apparel may be a shirt, and the article of apparel may include arm regions that extend outward from the torso region.

The internal skeleton may be deformed by the user as desired. The internal skeleton includes shape-memory properties so that after deformation, the device retains the shape desired by the user. The motorized portion is secured within the external housing so that desired portions of the device receive the majority of the stimulation provided by the motorized portion.

Abstract: A shape memory composition includes a high temperature ionomer having a glass transition temperature or a melting temperature of 100° C. or greater and a modulus at room temperature of 1×108 Pa or greater, the high temperature ionomer including a polymer with ionic units either within the backbone of the polymer or pendant to the backbone or both. The shape memory composition includes crystalline or glassy domains of a low molecular weight non-polymeric compound dispersed in the high temperature ionomer and interacting the ionic units of the high temperature ionomer to form a secondary network characterized by being a reversible network in that it is compromised by the heating of the low molecular weight non-polymeric compound to change out of its crystalline or glassy phase.

Abstract: Catheter systems and methods are disclosed. An exemplary catheter includes an outer tubing housing and an inner fluid delivery tubing, the inner fluid delivery tubing having at least one fluid delivery port. The catheter also includes a deployment member movable axially within the inner fluid delivery tubing. A plurality of splines are each connected at a proximal end to the outer tubing and at a distal end to deployment member. A seal is provided between the outer tubing and the inner fluid delivery tubing. A gasket is provided between the deployment member and the inner fluid delivery tubing. Both the seal and the gasket are configured to prevent blood or other fluid from ingressing into the outer tubing.
