摘要: An ankle-foot orthosis is made integrally from a thin, shaped lightweight material. The orthosis comprises a flat foot-supporting member for extending beneath the sole of a foot of a user, a calf abutment member for abutting the calf of the user, a narrow connecting member extending from the foot-supporting member at a location on one side, preferably the outer side, of the ankle of the user to the calf abutment member so as to interconnect the foot-supporting member and the calf abutment member, and a releasable fastener for fastening the calf abutment member to a leg of the user. The orthosis may be made by a method, in which a thermoplastic material with reinforcing fibers is arranged between opposite plastic films or foils in a desired mutual arrangement. Thereafter, the space defined between the opposite films is sealed, and air or gas is then removed from the sealed space so as to compact the material arranged therein and so as to form a blank. The blank thus formed is thereafter heated to a plasticizing temperature and formed into the desired shape.

摘要: In one form of the present invention, a system for constructing a laminate (122) is disclosed. The system comprises a ply feeder (101) that sequentially stacks one or more plies (100) to form a ply stack (102). A computer (106) directs a laser (104) to cut each ply (100) to a desired shape after becoming part of the ply stack (102). The ply stack (102) is then placed on a reconfigurable tool (112). An applied pressure compresses the ply stack (102) against the reconfigurable tool (112) while an actuator (124) subsequently reconfigures the reconfigurable tool pins (114) to a predetermined shape. In a more particular embodiment, a composites forming process is used, such as diaphragm forming, to compress the ply stack (102) before the reconfigurable tool pins (114) are reconfigured. In another particular embodiment, the reconfigurable tool pins (114) are first reconfigured then a vacuum diaphragm forming process is utilized to compress the ply stack (102) against the reconfigurable tool (112).

摘要: A method of manufacturing resin articles with naturally formed patterns is provided. The method uses organic matter, such as portions of a fern like the "Sphaeropteris lepifera", and a resin, to be molded together and then machined into a desired shape. The inner surfaces of the upper mold section and the lower mold section are covered by aluminum foil sheets and enclose a portion of a fern, such as the "Sphaeropteris lepifera" therein. A resin is injected into the mold through an opening in one foil sheet and the mold is heated to an appropriate temperature. Subsequently, the mold is cooled by room temperature air and dried by a drying machine. The resin is removed from the mold and machined into a particular shape in accordance with a predetermined design. The shaped molded resin is smoothed by grinding or filling in uneven portions with resin. After smoothing, the molded resin is polished to provide a naturally-formed pattern on the surface thereof.

摘要: Capitalizing on the unique feature of our induction heating workcell that permits rapid and controlled heating and cooling of a workpiece within a wide temperature range permits combining several manufacturing operations into a single heating cycle to save time, energy, capital, touch labor, and factory space. For example, we can combine superplastic forming (SPF) with brazing, two operations that occur at temperatures that differ by about 150-200.degree. F. (85-105-C.) or more, to produce quality parts. Or, we can combine SPF with .beta.-annealing; of titanium. Finally, we can combine forming, brazing, and annealing into an economical single cycle. Illustrating our combined cycles, we produce multisheet SPF parts with braze joints at selected locations with improved energy efficiency and at lower cost by heating the multisheet pack to its superplastic forming range below the melting point of the braze alloy, superplastically forming the pack to define braze joints having unmelted braze alloy; increasing the temperature to the braze temperature of the braze alloy, and cooling the pack below the superplastic range to freeze the braze alloy in the braze joint.

摘要: A system and method for reducing the occurrence of undesirable deformations (e.g., wrinkling) in a reinforced thermoformable workpiece. The reduction in undesirable deformations is achieved by increasing the buckling resistance of the workpiece by employing a supplemental reinforcing structure. The reinforcement, in combination with a pair of shaping diaphragms, increase the effective buckling resistance applied to the workpiece during the fabrication of a composite product. The method includes forming a workpiece from a plurality of layers of a thermoformable material, and applying to at least one side of the material an external reinforcing structure to form a reinforced workpiece having a top side and a bottom side. At least one of the top or bottom sides of the reinforced workpiece is placed in contact vith a diaphragm, thus forming a shaping assembly. The shaping assembly is then urged into contact with a shaping surface of a work tool to form a composite product, having a shape complementary to the shape of the tool. The composite product is then removed from the tool.
