Abstract:
Thermosetting liquid coating compositions, based on polymer capable of being crosslinked with nitrogen resin crosslinkers, nitrogen resin crosslinker, and blocked acid catalyst prepared from materials containing at least one oxirane functionality and a sulfonic acid and having a resistivity of at least one megohm are provided. The novel thermosetting coating compositions are particularly useful in electrostatic spraying applications.
Abstract:
The adhesion, especially wet adhesion, properties of conventional polymer latices are greatly improved by the incorporation of groups derived from the reaction of carbonyl groups with hydrazines therein. The hydrazine-modified groups can be present in any component of the polymer latex, but are advantageously part of the main polymer itself. Preferred main polymers are therefore those containing carbonyl units capable of reacting with hydrazine or a substituted hydrazine, especially copolymers of N-3-oxyhydrocarbon-substituted acrylamides such as diacetone acrylamide. Significantly improved wet adhesion properties are obtained even with very low proportions of the hydrazone-modified groups.

An organic solvent based composition comprising a blend of certain quantities of a partially or fully alkylated glycoluril blended with certain organic solvent dispersible non-gelled, non-self-crosslinking polymeric materials containing only certain reactive groups and catalyzed with small quantities of an acid catalyst which will cause the glycoluril derivative to crosslink with the polymeric material, when subjected to heat.

An aqueous coating composition is provided that is preferably substantially free of styrene and structural units derived from styrene. The coating composition includes a resin system that preferably includes a water-dispersible polymer and an emulsion polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer component. The resin system is preferably formed using a process that includes emulsion polymerizing the ethylenically unsaturated monomer component in the presence of an aqueous dispersion including the water-dispersible polymer. In certain preferred embodiments, the water-dispersible polymer is a salt of an acid- or anhydride-functional aromatic polyether polymer.
Abstract:
Some variations provide a multiphase polymer composition comprising a first polymer material and a second polymer material that are chemically distinct, wherein the first polymer material and the second polymer material are microphase-separated on a microphase-separation length scale from about 0.1 microns to about 500 microns, wherein the multiphase polymer composition comprises first solid functional particles selectively dispersed within the first polymer material, and wherein the first solid functional particles are chemically distinct from the first polymer material and the second polymer material. Some embodiments provide an anti-corrosion composition comprising first corrosion-inhibitor particles or precursors selectively dispersed within the first polymer material, wherein the multiphase polymer composition optionally further comprises second corrosion-inhibitor particles or precursors selectively dispersed within the second polymer material. These multiphase polymer compositions may be used for other applications, such as self-cleaning, self-healing, or flame-retardant coatings. Methods of making and using these multiphase polymer compositions are disclosed.

A gas barrier laminate 10 having an inorganic barrier layer 3 and a water-trapping layer 5 that are formed on a plastic base material 1, the water-trapping layer 5 including a matrix of a cationic polymer (a) in which is distributed a hygroscopic agent (b) having such a hygroscopic property as to attain a humidity lower than a humidity that can be attained by using the matrix. The gas barrier laminate exhibits super barrier property against water despite of a structure of a small number of layers.
