A process plant comprises a tank (1), an outlet conduit (2), a reservoir of cleaning agent (12), or feedstock(s) of additive(s) (13), a loop conduit (3) for returning liquid into the tank, valve means (9) for controlling admission of liquid into the loop conduit and a pump (4) for driving liquid through the loop conduit. Returning of the liquid takes place through a jetting device (5) adapted for introducing jets of liquid into the body of liquid inside the tank in order to cause stirring to the body of liquid. The jet nozzle is adapted for powered rotation about a first axis and about a second axis perpendicular, or non-perpendicular, to the first axis. The jet nozzles may be embodied in a flat jet rotating around one axis only. Upon emptying the tank, the jetting device may serve for cleaning the tank by spraying liquid onto the tank walls. The invention provides a method for treating liquid as well as a process plant.

Embodiments of a remediation reactor and mixer/contactor blade for the reactor are shown and described, the reactor (11) being for containing a liquid slurry, suspension or settled bed of solid particles containing microorganisms. Inside the vessel is a supply conduit and at least one generally horizontal stirrer blade (27) in fluid connection with the supply conduit. The stirrer blade is a mixer/contactor which has a leading side having openings through which fluid may pass. The stirrer blade rotates in the vessel, and this rotation is made easier by the hydraulic forces of fluid flowing out from the stirrer blade. The flowing fluid creates a fluidization zone in the slurry, suspension or settled bed at or near the leading edge of the stirrer blade. The fluidization zone is less dense than the rest of the sediment bed, and the stirrer blade tends to rotate into the fluidization zone. This way, controlled rotation of the stirrer blade may be created near the bottom of the vessel, enhancing mixing of the microorganisms with the slurry, suspension or settled bed in the vessel, without unnecessarily damaging the microorganisms, especially when the flowing fluid contains contaminants which are nutrients for the microorganisms.

Fluid recirculation aids in the fluidization of the filter medium and allows for intermittent operation with a significant reduction in energy and operating costs. The vessel may be operated as an aerobic bioreactor by recirculating air or as an anaerobic bioreactor by recirculating an inert gas.

A pump is provided to circulate the liquid substance along an endless path extending in part through the mixing chamber, and the partition has an opening slightly above or at the level of the bottom wall of the mixing chamber to permit direct flow of mixture between the two chambers when the mixture in the storage chamber reaches a certain level. The flow of mixture through the opening is controlled by a valve including a float.
