摘要: The present invention provides muscle-derived progenitor cells (MDCs) that show long-term survival following transplantation into body tissues and which can augment soft tissue following introduction into a site of soft tissue. Also provided are methods of isolating MDCs. The invention further provides methods of using compositions comprising MDCs for the augmentation and bulking of mammalian, including human, soft tissues in the treatment of various cosmetic or functional conditions, including malformation, injury, weakness, disease, or dysfunction. The invention also relates to uses of MDCs for the treatment of cosmetic or functional conditions, including, but not limited to skeletal muscle weakness, muscular dystrophy, muscle atrophy, spasticity, myoclonus and myalgia. The invention also relates to the novel use of MDCs for the increase of skeletal muscle.

摘要: Computational techniques are disclosed for using methylation profiles to classify the medication condition of a person. Initial sequence data is obtained containing sequences of an initial set of nucleic acids from a biological sample of a person. The initial sequence data is filtered to generate filtered sequence data that describes sequences of a filtered subset of nucleic acids from the biological sample. A methylation profile is determined for the filtered subset of nucleic acids from the biological sample. The methylation profile can be processed to determine a likelihood that the person has the specified medical condition. The system outputs an indication of the likelihood that the person has the specified medical condition.

摘要: A wheelchair can comprise: a frame comprising an upper portion and a lower portion that is coupled to the upper portion so that the upper portion is vertically adjustable with respect to the lower portion. A pair of drive wheels can be coupled to the frame. A plurality (e.g., a pair) of casters are coupled to the frame. Each caster can have a respective swivel axis. At least one caster of the plurality of casters can be configured to be locked to prevent swiveling about its respective swivel axis and unlocked to enable swiveling about its respective swivel axis.

摘要: Provided are methods for preparing sterilized, gelled, solubilized extracellular matrix (ECM) compositions useful as cell growth substrates. Also provided are compositions prepared according to the methods as well as uses for the compositions. In one embodiment a device, such as a prosthesis, is provided which comprises an inorganic matrix into which the gelled, solubilized ECM is dispersed to facilitate in-growth of cells into the ECM and thus adaptation and/or attachment of the device to a patient.

摘要: A method of compensating for focus drift in a microscopy system includes receiving data representing a reference light signal reflected from a sample and received by an image sensor, identifying from the data a peak of the reference light signal, the peak having a maximum intensity value for the reference light signal, extracting a sub-region having a center from the data, the center being located at the peak, calculating a first harmonic of a Fourier transform of the extracted sub-region, estimating a peak position of the reference light signal based on a phase of the first harmonic, and moving the lens system of the microscopy system or the sample in the axial direction using the translation stage based on the estimated position. Also, a system compensating for focus drift in a microscopy system according to the above method.

摘要: The invention relates to compositions including magnesium-lithium alloys containing various alloying elements suitable for medical implant devices. The devices may be constructed of the compositions or have applied thereto a coating formed therefrom. Within the structure of the magnesium-lithium alloy, there is a co-existence of alpha and beta phases. The invention also relates to methods of preparing the magnesium-lithium alloys and articles, such as medical implant devices, for use in medical applications, such as but not limited to, orthopedic, dental, craniofacial and cardiovascular surgery.

摘要: The invention relates to biomimetic, biodegradable composites including a magnesium (Mg) alloy mesh and a polymer/extracellular matrix (ECM). These hybrid composites, more particularly, are useful for the fabrication of medical implant devices, e.g., scaffolds, and are effective for bone regeneration. The fabrication process includes creating the Mg alloy mesh, and concurrently electrospinning the polymer and electrospraying the ECM onto the mesh.

摘要: An extracorporeal system for lung assist includes a housing having a blood flow inlet in fluid connection with a pressurizing stator compartment within the housing. A fiber bundle compartment within the housing is above and in fluid connection with the pressurizing stator compartment via a flow channel formed within the housing and extending from the pressurizing stator compartment to an inlet manifold of the fiber bundle compartment. A blood flow outlet in is fluid connection with an outlet man fold of the fiber bundle compartment. The blood flow inlet extends through the housing parallel to a plane of rotation of an impeller in the pressurizing stator compartment. The blood flow inlet turns to deliver blood into a central portion of the impeller. A has inlet is in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with inlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers of a cylindrical fiber bundle positioned within the fiber bundle compartment. A gas outlet is in fluid connection with the housing and in fluid connection with outlets of the plurality of hollow gas permeable fibers.
