A porous ion exchanger includes an open cell structure including interconnected macropores and mesopores whose average diameter is in a range of 1 to 1000 μm existing on walls of the macropores. Moreover, a total pore volume is in a range of 1 to 50 ml/g, ion exchange groups are uniformly distributed, and an ion exchange capacity is not less than 0.5 mg equivalent/g of dry porous ion exchanger. The porous ion exchanger can be used as an ion exchanger filled into a deionization module of an electrodeionization water purification device, solid acid catalyst, adsorbent, and filler for chromatography.

The present invention relates to a novel device for transport of chemicals and biochemicals in small amounts such as in microgram range. For example, a pipette tip, or a film containing chromatographic media, wherein the media contains an enzyme for the enzymic action. The enzyme is adsorbed on the surface of the chromatographic media and is non-covalently bound. These enzyme containing tips will be used for the transport of very small amounts of enzyme to the sample, where the biochemical reaction takes place. They will also be used in a buffer where the enzyme will be kept adsorbed on the chromatographic media and will not dissociate from chromatographic media and the substrate will react with the enzyme on the surface of the media. Furthermore, the presence of chromatographic media can be used simultaneously for the purification of the reaction product from the buffer components.

The procedure allows the direct formation of dry, solvent-free, macroporous/mesoporous cross-linked monoliths with large surface area and well-controlled pore size distribution.

A method for manufacturing a matrix including a base matrix having macropores in which an interior material is located. The method is characterized in including the steps: (I) providing a base matrix having macropores; (ii) filling the macropores with a soluble form of the interior material; (iii) transforming the insoluble from to an insoluble form; (iv) shrinking the insoluble form; and (v) irreversibly stabilizing the material in its shrunken form. The matrix can be used in separation methods, cell culturing, solid phase synthesis of organic molecules, and in catalytic reactions (such as enzyme reactions) and other uses in which porous support matrices are used.

This invention deals with a composite membrane comprising a thermoplastic matrix and fibrous reinforcing construct for use in constructing membrane blood oxygenators. The surface of the composite membrane can be chemically activated to incorporate functional groups to provide certain desirable properties to increase the utility of the membrane and extend its use to chromatographic applications and incorporation in dialysis units.
