Abstract: A fan (16) draws air through a core (14) of a radiator (10) to which coolant from coolant passages in an engine (12) rejects heat. A shroud (28) having first and second parts (30, 32) in axial succession channels air that has been drawn through the core toward the fan. The first part (30) is a non-elastomeric ring, and the second part (32) has an elastomeric ring (34) having opposite axial ends, one of which telescopically fits to the non-elastomeric ring of the first part (30) and the other of which joins with a second non-elastomeric ring (36).

Abstract: The present invention includes a system and method for providing assurance and evidence that a particular part has been installed and properly maintained. In particular, automotive sensing systems may be incorporated into two-part sensor assemblies that are disposable within a vehicle. The sensor assemblies are adapted to provide evidence of tampering via mechanical, electrical and temperature-based means. In a preferred embodiment, the sensor assembly is disposed about an automotive heat exchanger and a plurality of thermal sensors measure the temperature of the heat exchanger. Any alteration in the orientation or placement of the sensor assembly causes a variance between the temperatures measured by the thermal sensors, which in turn provides clear indication of tampering to the driver.

Abstract: A method of controlling a fluid actuated fan drive system (12) for an engine (14) includes determining an engine speed. The speed of a fluid actuated engine-cooling fan (16) is limited when the engine speed is greater than or equal to an engine over-speed level. The fluid controlled fan drive system (12) includes a sensor (31) that generates an engine speed signal. The system (12) also includes the fluid actuated engine-cooling fan (16) and an engagement circuit (36) that is coupled thereto. A controller (28) is coupled to the sensor (31) and the engagement circuit (36) and limits operating speed of the engine-cooling fan (16) to less than a predetermined level when the engine speed signal is indicative of an engine over-speed condition.

Abstract: A control apparatus such as an ECU, that controls the generator of a vehicle, measures the engine rotation speed and generator rotation speed while the engine is idling, and calculates and stores the ratio of the speed values. Thereafter when the vehicle is being driven and the current value of generator rotation speed is required, it is calculated based on the stored ratio value and the currently measured speed of the engine. The processing load on the ECU is thereby reduced, since generator rotation speed measurement processing is performed only in the idling condition.

Abstract: To decrease adhesion of dirt to a radiator, miniaturize the radiator in front of an engine and improve engine cooling performance by efficiently applying cooling air to the engine. An oil cooler includes a first oil cooler and a second oil cooler. The first oil cooler is disposed in front of an engine. The second oil cooler is disposed in a front cover at a position higher than an upper edge of a front wheel. The first oil cooler is disposed immediately in front of a cooling fan. The first oil cooler is disposed so as to close an air intake guide of the cooling fan less than 50%. The first oil cooler and the second oil cooler are serially connected along an oil line. A heat radiation area of the second oil cooler is larger than that of the first oil cooler.

Abstract: The present invention provides a cooling apparatus for use with a liquid cooled vertical shaft internal combustion engine with a centrifugal fan having a central axis which is driven by the engine vertical shaft. A radiator having a coolant passing therethrough encircles the fan for an improved heat transfer rate. An air duct channels cooling air expelled by the fan toward the radiator to cool the coolant.

Abstract: A radiator (12a) and an oil cooler (12b) are disposed separately from an engine (11) of a construction machine and cooled by a cooling fan (15). The oil cooler (12b) is located downstream from the radiator (12a) with respect to the air flow generated when the cooling fan (15) is driven in reverse. A hydraulic motor (32) is adapted to be controlled by a directional control solenoid valve (34) of a fan driving circuit (31) so that the cooling fan (15) may be stopped, rotated forward or rotated in reverse accordingly. The directional control solenoid valve (34) is adapted to be automatically switched by a control device (41) having temperature sensors (44), (45), (46). The control device (41) is adapted to rotate the cooling fan (15) in reverse in cases where the temperature of the cooling water is not lower than a given temperature while the temperature of the hydraulic oil is lower than a given temperature, thereby causing the warm air which has passed the radiator (12a) to warm the hydraulic oil in the oil cooler (12b) and also causing back flow of the air to discharge debris lodged in the radiator (12a) and other components.

Abstract: A high efficiency, low solidity, low weight, axial flow fan (100, 200, 300) includes a hub (102, 202, 302), fan blades (104, 204, 304) and a circular band (106, 206, 306). The hub (102, 202, 302) rotates about a rotational axis (110, 210, 310) when torque is applied from a shaft (not shown) rotatably driven by a power source (not shown). The circular band (106, 206, 306) is concentric with the hub (102, 202, 302) and is spaced radially outward from the hub. The blades (104, 204, 304) are distributed circumferentially around the hub (102, 202, 302) and extend radially from the hub to the circular band (106, 206, 306). The blades (104, 204, 304) are configured to produce an airflow when rotated about the rotational axis (110, 210, 310). Each blade (104, 204, 304) has a chord length distribution which varies along the length of the blade, such that the chord length has a local minimum value at a predetermined location between the ends of the blade. The chord length of the blades (104, 204, 304) as a function of blade radius from the rotational axis (110, 210, 310) has an inflection point at a predetermined distance from the hub less than the length of the blade.

Abstract: A cooling system for a vehicle. The cooling system has a radiator and a fan that draws cooling air through the radiator. The fan is recessed into the radiator such that the motor is substantially cooled by air that has not passed through said radiator. The radiator may be an interconnected spaced-apart bi-sectional radiator with the fan interposed therebetween, the radiator being shaped so as to feed air through the fan. The cooling system may have a variable speed pump at the outlet to the radiator.

Abstract: A heat exchanger module, a cooling fan module, a pump/fan module, and an electronics system control module are joined together in assembly to form a total cooling assembly for an automotive vehicle that is powered by an internal combustion engine. The cooling fan module is disposed directly behind the rear face of the radiator, and contains an electric motor-driven fan that draws ambient air across the radiator. At time of installation in a vehicle, the assembly is "dropped into" the vehicle engine compartment and secured in place. An electric motor-driven coolant pump module that pumps engine coolant through the engine and radiator, and an electronics system control module that controls the operation of the fan and pump motors also mount on the cooling fan module. When the vehicle has an air conditioning system, and/or turbo-charged engine, one and/or two additional heat exchangers form part of the heat exchanger module. The cooling fan module may comprise an axial flow fan or a ducted radial flow fan.
