摘要: A microdevice is provided for controlling fluid flow. The microdevice includes a substantially planar contact surface and a plurality of fluid-transporting features associated therewith. Also included is a substrate having a substantially planar contact surface and a fluid-transporting feature associated therewith. The contact surfaces are positioned in slidable and fluid-tight contact to allow for controllable formation of a plurality of different flow paths upon alignment of the substrate fluid-transporting feature with each cover plate fluid-transporting features in succession. Typically, at least one of the cover plate and substrate is comprised of a biofouling resistant polymer, and the flow paths are of different lengths. Optionally, a plurality of fluid-transporting features is associated with the substrate so that flow paths are formed as a result of a different alignment of the fluid-transporting features.

摘要: The present invention relates to a microdevice having a valve structure that contains low or no dead volume. The microdevice comprises a substrate and a cover plate each having a substantially planar contact surface and each contact surface having a fluid-transporting feature associated therewith. The substrate contact surface is positioned in slidable and fluid-tight contact with the cover plate contact surface to allow for controllable alignment between the fluid-transporting features. As a result, fluid communication is provided therebetween through a small area. Where the cover plate fluid-transporting feature comprises a conduit, the conduit may have a substantially constant cross-sectional area. The controllable alignment between the fluid-transporting features may form an alignment-dependent variable-length flow path.

摘要: A method of providing ions to a mass spectrometer having an interface member with an orifice through which ions are received for analysis. A fluid is provided at a capillary tip of an electrospray ionization source and a potential difference applied between the tip and the interface member so as to direct an ion beam from the tip toward and through the orifice. A field enhancing potential is applied at an auxiliary electrode so as to increase the electric field gradient from the capillary tip at least part way toward the interface member. A focussing potential may be applied to the auxiliary electrode to generate an electric field which decreases beam divergence from at least part way toward the interface member. Both the field enhancing and focusing potential may alternately be applied to the auxiliary electrode.

摘要: A system and method for measuring flow rate within a fluid-bearing passageway include introducing heat fluctuations into the flow and then non-invasively monitoring the effects of the heat fluctuations propagating to or from one or more interrogation regions. In one embodiment, the non-invasive monitoring detects fluctuations in the refractive index of the flowing fluid as a result of variations in the temperature of the fluid. In another embodiment, electrical conductivity of the fluid is monitored. The heat fluctuations may be introduced using an optical heat generator, such as an infrared laser, or may be introduced using an electrical member, such as a heater coil. Determining the refractive index along the interrogation region may be achieved by monitoring characteristics on an interference pattern, but other optical arrangements may be utilized.

摘要: An analytical system for analyzing a fluid sample is disclosed. The analytical system includes a microcolumn for conducting the fluid sample, a light source for delivering light through the microcolumnar wall into the microcolumn near the outlet end of that microcolumn, and an optical fiber aligned with the microcolumn to detect light that radiates from the fluid sample without passing through the microcolumnar wall. The microcolumn has an inlet end and an outlet end. A light-inlet end of the optical fiber is nonfixedly coupled to the outlet end of the microcolumn. As the fluid sample is driven from the inlet end to the outlet end of the microcolumn, a light of a suitable wavelength is directed at the microcolumn near its outlet end to cause light interaction with the fluid sample. As a result, light radiates from the fluid sample. This light is collected by the optical fiber to provide information on the presence or quantity of an analyte in the fluid sample.

摘要: A behavioral targeting system determines user profiles from online activity. The system includes a plurality of models that define parameters for determining a user profile score. Event information, which comprises on-line activity of the user, is received at an entity. To generate a user profile score, a model is selected. The model comprises recency, intensity and frequency dimension parameters. The behavioral targeting system generates a user profile score for a target objective, such as brand advertising or direct response advertising. The parameters from the model are applied to generate the user profile score in a category. The behavioral targeting system has application for use in ad serving to on-line users.
