Cardiovascular and other medical implants fabricated from low-modulus Ti--Nb--Zr alloys to provide enhanced biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The cardiovascular implants may be surface hardened by oxygen or nitrogen diffusion or by coating with a tightly adherent, hard, wear-resistant, hemocompatible ceramic coating. The cardiovascular implants include heart valves, total artificial heart implants, ventricular assist devices, vascular grafts, stents, electrical signal carrying devices such as pacemaker and neurological leads, defibrillator leads, and the like. It is contemplated that the Ti--Nb--Zr alloy can be substituted as a fabrication material for any cardiovascular implant that either comes into contact with blood thereby demanding high levels of hemocompatibility, or that is subject to microfretting, corrosion, or other wear and so that a low modulus metal with a corrosion-resistant, hardened surface would be desirable.

The present invention provides a method and structure for absorbing shock in a load bearing prosthesis, particularly in a load-bearing skeletal prosthesis. Where the prosthesis is a hip-joint replacement, the invention provides a method and structure for absorbing shock (1) at the interface between the femoral head and cup, and (2) at the interface between the femur and the stem of the prosthesis. Where the prosthesis is a femoral head prosthesis, the prosthesis is formed using two separate components which are mechanically connected using an elastomeric component. The connection permits relative motion between the structural components of the prosthesis, with the elastomeric component acting as a passive shock absorbing element.

A metallic implantable finger joint has a biocompatible protective coating and includes both a base member and a protraction member. The base member is formed with a recess and has a protrusion projecting from inside the recess. The protraction member has a hemispherical surface which is slidingly engageable with the recess of the base member. Additionally, the protraction member is formed with a groove which engagingly receives the protrusion from the base member. This engagement is such that when the base member is juxtaposed with the protraction member, the interaction between the protrusion and the groove allows for relative movement between the members in flexion-extension, lateral rotation and pure rotation. The finger joint can also include implant barbs which are selectively engageable with the base member and the protraction member.

The transverse faces have a central region with three-dimensional features thereon and an anterior platform region lying along an anterior margin of the transverse faces. The faces defining the ends of the solid body include a convexly curved anterior face and a posterior face. The solid body is made of a biocompatible synthetic material. A kit that may be used by a surgeon includes an implant and an implant delivery tool dimensioned to releasably hold the implant. The delivery tool preferably has a pair of flexible opposed arms extending from a base, separated so that the implant can fit between the arms, and may have a breakable release band extending around the implant to hold it in place until a weak link in the release band is intentionally broken during implantation.
