A lubricant includes carbon particles in a carrier. The carbon particles may be nearly spherical, individually have maximum and minimum diameters that differ by no more than ten nanometers, and the maximum diameters of the carbon particles are less than one micrometer. The lubricant may be manufactured by preparing the carbon particles by ultrasound-assisted polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde in an aqueous system followed by a heat treatment in an inert or non-oxidizing atmosphere and dispersion of the carbon particles in the liquid hydrocarbon carrier to form the lubricant. Optionally, inorganic metals, alloys, or oxides are coated on the surface of the carbon particles via an additional thermolysis step.

A polymer-brush-based, surface-modification strategy for friction and wear reduction in hard contact under boundary-lubrication conditions is proposed, specifically for a non-aqueous environment. Surface-initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-ATRP) was employed for the synthesis of three different oil-compatible, hydrophobic polymer brushes based on alkyl methacrylates. This study presents polymerization kinetics, chemical characterization by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and surface morphologies observed in atomic force microscopy (AFM). The lubrication properties of the anchored polymers were evaluated macroscopically by means of ball-on-disk methods and on the nanonewton scale by lateral force microscopy (AFM/LFM) and showed significant reduction in friction up to contact pressures as high as 460 MPa. The frictional response of surface-grafted polymers is shown to depend strongly on the compatibility of the polymer with the chosen lubricating fluid. Their good tribological performances have also been proven with watchmaking lubricants. These results do make the prevent invention a suitable candidate for a watchmaking application (such as at the balance pivot or the escapement) in order to increase the efficiency and reliability of the movements.

This disclosure relates to vinyl terminated macromer (VTM) based synthetic basestocks and their methods of preparation, lubricant compositions, methods of lubrication and products so lubricated. The VTM based synthetic basestocks useful for fuels and lubricants include oligomerization or polymerization products of one or more allylic vinyl terminated macromers (VTMs) having a molecular weight from 84 to 10080. The one or more allylic VTMs are oligomerized or polymerized in the presence of a catalyst under oligomerization or polymerization conditions sufficient to give the VTM based synthetic basestock. The catalyst can be a metallocene catalyst or an acid catalyst, e.g., Lewis acid. The one or more allylic vinyl terminated macromers (VTMs) can be one or more allylic vinyl terminated atactic polypropylene macromers (VTM aPP) having a molecular weight from 84 to 2250 and having a terminal allylic vinyl olefin content of at least 90%.
