Abstract: A laminate and method of making same is disclosed. The laminate includes a base layer and a low melt layer directly or indirectly bonded on one side thereof to the base layer and a product layer adhered to the other side of said low melt layer; the low melt layer extends beyond the product layer along a peripheral portion thereof. The low melt layer when in registry with an adjacent laminate and subjected to heat bonds with and forms a substantially water tight seal with the adjacent laminate. Various base, low melt and product layers are disclosed.

Abstract: A single facer which includes a rotating corrugating roll for corrugating a medium; an endless belt for pressing a liner against the medium on the corrugating roll; at least a pair of belt rolls for running the endless belt; and a direction adjusting mechanism for changing the running direction of the endless belt with respect to the rotating shaft of the corrugating roll within the running plane of the endless belt to correct zigzag or sideway motion of the belt occurring while the belt is running; a detector for detecting sideway displacements of the endless belt; a computer for computing a positional correction to be made in the width direction based on a signal from the detector; and a controller for controlling the direction adjusting mechanism based on a value computed by the computer. In addition to the adjustment of the running direction of the endless belt, a tension balance between the opposite edges of the endless belt can be corrected by adjusting the relative angle between the shafts of the belt rolls.

Abstract: A process for producing a polypropylene sheet or film. The process includes (a) providing two opposing cooling rolls which are maintained at a temperature of 10.degree. to 50.degree. C., (b) passing a metallic endless belt having a surface roughness of not more than 1.5 .mu.m under tension, between the opposing cooling rolls, (c) producing a molten sheet or film of a polypropylene composition, the composition comprising polypropylene and at least one additive selected from the group consisting of a nucleating agent, a finely powdered high melting point polymer, a petroleum resin, a terpene resin, an organic peroxide and a crystalline propylene-based copolymer, (d) subjecting the produced sheet or film to a specular finishing treatment by passing the sheet or film between the metallic endless belt and one of the cooling rolls and conveying the sheet or film on the metallic endless belt over a surface portion of at least one of the cooling rolls and (e) separating the sheet or film from the metallic endless belt after the specular finishing treatment. The process results in a polypropylene sheet or film excellent in transparency and surface gloss, although not stretched. Moreover, the process provides high speed production of a polypropylene sheet of film.

Abstract: An apparatus for processing a self-supporting web includes a rotatable mandrel and a stationary block member which defines a recess adjacent the mandrel. The recess is shaped to form a converging chamber between the mandrel and the block member, which converges in the direction of motion of the self-supporting web. A belt is mounted for movement through the chamber and is positioned between the self-supporting web and the block member. The chamber is sized to compress the self-supporting web between the block member and the mandrel, thereby reducing the thickness of the self-supporting web as it passes through the chamber. This apparatus can be used for laminating, liquid removal, or caliper reduction operations on the self-supporting web.

Abstract: A web of plastic material presenting filtering properties comprises a porous layer interconnected with a first non woven layer of plastic fibers.The porous layer is formed by heating another nonwoven of plastic fibers, having a lower plasticizing temperature than the fibers of the first non woven, to at least the plasticizing temperature of the fibers of the other non woven but below the plasticizing temperature of the fibers of the first non woven.The first nonwoven consists of polyester fibers and the other nonwoven, e.g., of polypropylene fibers.An apparatus for manufacturing such a web comprises a central roller, and endless felt band partially slung around said central roller, a heating member and a cooling element.In one embodiment the apparatus comprises a heatable central roller, a second endless metal band engaging a coolable second roller, said heatable central roller and an endless felt band partially surrounding the heatable central roller and a part of the metal band engaging said heatable central roller, non-woven material being passed between said endless metal band and said felt band (FIG. 2).In an other embodiment the central roller is a coolable central roller, heating means being accommodated opposite a region of the central roller and a part of the metal band engaging said part of the central roller. The felt band engages the central roller before and after the region opposite the heating means (FG. 3).

Abstract: Method for bonding two moving webs of a cover material to opposite sides of a moving web of a core material including means for applying discrete portions of adhesive to the surface of the of the webs of cover material and to one of the surfaces of the core material, means for bringing the two moving webs of cover material into contact with the moving web of core material and means for holding all the webs together while subjecting the adhesive to heat in order to cure the adhesive in one pass through the apparatus. The method of bonding two webs of a cover material to opposite sides of a moving web of core material comprising the steps of applying discrete portions of adhesive portions to adhesive to one side of one web of cover material, bringing a web of cover material into contact with each other with each side of the web of core material and compressing the resultant laminate of webs together while subjecting the laminate to heat in order to cure the adhesive.
