摘要: A catalyst suited for reducing NOx in an exhaust gas by ammonia in the presence of excess oxygen is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. An aqueous urea solution is fed from a flow addition valve onto a catalyst, part of the urea fed to the catalyst is stored in the catalyst, and the ammonia generated from the urea stored in the catalyst is used to reduce the NOx in the exhaust gas. At the time of engine startup, at the time of cold operation, and at the time of increase of the HC amount, it is determined that the amount of formaldehyde in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst exceeds the allowable amount, and, at this time, the feed of urea to the catalyst is prohibited.

摘要: An exhaust emission purification device comprises a sulfur component holding agent arranged on the exhaust path of an internal combustion engine for holding a sulfur component, a NOx holding agent arranged downstream of the sulfur component holding agent in the exhaust gas for holding NOx and the sulfur components when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing thereinto is lean, and a reducing agent adding unit for adding a reducing agent to the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx holding agent. The concentration of the sulfur component contained in the reducing agent added by the reducing agent adding unit is lower than the concentration of at least the sulfur component contained in the fuel supplied to the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. Thus, the sulfur poisoning of the exhaust emission purifier can be avoided while at the same time reducing the fuel consumption rate.

An aqueous urea solution is fed through a flow control valve (33) to the inside of the exhaust passage (21) upstream of the catalyst (22). When the temperature of the catalyst (22) is low, a large amount of the aqueous urea solution is fed to make the urea contained in the aqueous urea solution be stored in the catalyst (22). When the engine is accelerated and the temperature of the catalyst (22) rises, ammonia is released at a little at a time from the inside of the catalyst (22) and the NOx in the exhaust gas is reduced by the released ammonia.

摘要: A particulate filter (22) carrying an active oxygen release agent which takes in oxygen and holds oxygen when excess oxygen is present in the surroundings and releases the held oxygen in the form of active oxygen when the concentration of oxygen in the surroundings falls is arranged in an exhaust passage of an engine. The air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the particulate filter (22) is normally maintained lean and is occasionally switched to rich temporarily. When the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is switched to rich, an oxidation reaction of the particulate on the particulate filter is promoted by the active oxygen released from the active oxygen release agent. Due to this, the particulate in the exhaust gas is continuously removed by oxidation on the particulate filter (22) without emitting a luminous flame.

The exhaust throttle valve (45) is fully closed once, then fully opened cyclically. At that time, the flow velocity of the exhaust gas is increased for just an instant in a pulse-like manner, whereby masses of particulate are separated from the particulate filter 22 and discharged.

摘要: An exhaust purifying method and apparatus of an internal combustion engine are provided with an exhaust switch valve for switching a flow of exhaust gas flowing into an exhaust filter. By switching the exhaust switch valve, the exhaust gas is fed from one side and the other side of the filter, thereby stirring the soot (particulates) in the exhaust gas deposited on the filter having a NOx absorbent and an active-oxygen discharging agent supported thereon. Thus, the soot in the exhaust gas is continuously burned. Moreover, the switching of the exhaust switch valve and the rich spike are inhibited from being conducted simultaneously. In the case where the rich spike is conducted in order to discharge and reduce NOx absorbed in the NOx absorbent, the exhaust gas containing a large amount of HC and CO can be prevented from being discharged into the atmosphere without being purified.

摘要: According to the present invention, there is provided an exhaust gas purification device, comprising a NOx absorbent arranged in an exhaust passage of an engine for absorbing NOx therein when an air-fuel ratio of an exhaust gas flowing into the NOx absorbent is lean, the NOx absorbent discharging NOx absorbed therein when a concentration of the oxygen in the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx absorbent decreases, a trapping element arranged in the exhaust passage upstream of the NOx absorbent for trapping particulates, a processing element for processing the particulates trapped in the trapping element to regenerate the trapping element, and a preventing element for preventing the exhaust gas from flowing into the NOx absorbent from the trapping element when the trapping element is regenerated.

摘要: A device for purifying the exhaust gas of an engine comprises a NO.sub.X absorbent arranged in the exhaust passage. The NO.sub.X absorbent absorbs NO.sub.X therein when the air-fuel ratio of the inflowing exhaust gas is lean, and releases the absorbed NO.sub.X therefrom when the oxygen concentration in the inflowing exhaust gas becomes lower. The NO.sub.X absorbent also absorbs SO.sub.X therein when the air-fuel ratio of the inflowing exhaust gas is lean, and releases the absorbed SO.sub.X therefrom when the oxygen concentration in the inflowing exhaust gas becomes lower, with the temperature of the NO.sub.X absorbent being higher than a SO.sub.X releasing temperature. The air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing to the NO.sub.X absorbent is made rich temporarily when the temperature of the NO.sub.X absorbent is higher than SO.sub.X releasing temperature and when the flow rate of the exhaust gas flowing through the NO.sub.X absorbent is lower than a predetermined flow rate, to release the absorbed SO.sub.X from the NO.sub.X absorbent.
