    摘要: A diesel engine and method for operating a diesel engine with exhaust after-treatment device regeneration capability are disclosed. The diesel engine may employ an exhaust after-treatment device such as a diesel particular filter to remove soot from the combustion gases exhausted by the engine. In order to regenerate the exhaust after-treatment device, the temperature of the exhaust gases is raised sufficiently to do so. The temperature of the exhaust gases is raised to such a level by employing multiple compression and expansion strokes of the piston in certain engine cycles, with a combustion event associated with each pair of compression and expansion strokes. The engine may operate in a four stroke, one combustion cycle during conventional power operation, and switch to an enhanced combustion cycle during regeneration. The enhanced combustion cycle may include eight strokes such as one intake stroke, three compression strokes, three expansion strokes, and one exhaust stroke, with three combustion events. The engine may switch between cycles by using a cam follower with lost motion device capability, an electrical actuator, or any other selectively actuable valve actuator to prevent opening of the intake and exhaust valves during regeneration.

The exhaust valves 17 are opened substantially when a suction pressure is higher than an exhaust pressure in a suction stroke during the operation with the reduced number of cylinders at a low speed range, so that blown out amount of fresh air (suction air 4) to the exhaust side is increased to increase apparent exhaust flow rate and raise the level of the suction characteristic of the engine.

Furthermore, the method may include causing the exhaust valve to be open for part of an intake stroke of the piston and closing the exhaust valve at least about 30 degrees of crankshaft rotation after the intake stroke begins.

    摘要: An apparatus for achieving internal EGR in a four-stroke internal combustion engine which, for each cylinder, has at least one inlet valve and at least one exhaust valve for controlling the connection between combustion chambers in the cylinder and an inlet system and exhaust system respectively. A rotary camshaft with a cam curve is designed to interact with a follower member and has a first lobe portion for generating the normal exhaust valve lift of the engine. The camshaft is provided with a second lobe portion, which has a height measurement over and above its basic curve which falls short of the measurement for normal exhaust valve clearance when driving at low load and accompanying low heat development in the engine. As a result of thermal expansion in the valve mechanism, the height measurement exceeds the measurement for normal exhaust valve clearance when driving at high load and accompanying high heat development in the engine. The second lobe portion is situated within a crankshaft angular range of about 360-480 degrees.

    摘要: An engine valve actuator providing Miller cycle benefits and a method of operating an engine valve actuator are disclosed. The valve actuator employs a first force to hold an exhaust valve of the engine open during an exhaust stroke and a second, stronger force to hold the exhaust valve open during a compression stroke. The valve actuator may be operated using pressurized fluid adapted to extend an actuator piston through a cylinder. The first force may be derived by a mechanically driven actuator, while the second force may be derived from a high pressure rail of the engine. A low pressure source of the engine may be used to fill the actuator cylinder, with the high pressure rail only being placed into fluid communication with the cylinder when desired. A control valve may be employed to direct either the low pressure or high pressure fluid to the valve actuator cylinder.
