    Abstract: A device and method for forming a device including electron emitters. The method includes exposing a first face of a sheet of bundled fiber segments to a reactive liquid to allow first ends of the fiber segments to react with the reactive liquid to remove material therefrom. A coating material is deposited on the first face which has the material removed. The method also includes exposing a second face of the sheet of bundled fiber segments to a reactive liquid to allow second ends of the fiber segments to react with the reactive liquid to remove material therefrom to expose the coating material.

    Abstract: A field-emission electron source element includes a cathode substrate, an insulating layer that is formed on the cathode substrate and has an opening, a lead electrode formed on the insulating layer, and an emitter formed in the opening. A surface layer of an electron emitting region of the emitter is doped with at least one reducing element selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Further, an image display apparatus including the above-mentioned field-emission electron source element is provided. This makes it possible to obtain not only a stable field-emission electron source element that does not cause a current drop even after a high current density operation for a long time but also a high-performance image display apparatus that can maintain a stable display performance over a long period of time.

    Abstract: In a field emission cold-cathode device, a cathode line or electrode is arranged on a glass substrate. An emitter is arranged on the cathode electrode and is formed of a conductive layer, a low-work-function material layer, and a tip layer stacked one on top of the other in this order. The emitter has a pyramid shape in which the tip layer has a sharp tip. The low-work-function material layer is made of a material having a work function of 4.0 eV or less. The tip layer is made of a material having a negative electron affinity and formed of granular bodies or linear bodies each having a diameter of 100 nm or less.

    Abstract: A cathode structure suitable for a flat panel display is provided with coated emitters. The emitters are formed with material, typically nickel, capable of growing to a high aspect ratio. These emitters are then coated with carbon containing material for improving the chemical robustness and reducing the work function. One coating process is a DC plasma deposition process in which acetylene is pumped through a DC plasma reactor to create a DC plasma for coating the cathode structure. An alternative coating process is to electrically deposit raw carbon-based material onto the surface of the emitters, and subsequently reduce the raw carbon-based material to the carbon containing material. Work function of coated emitters is typically reduced by about 0.8 to 1.0 eV.

    Abstract: Methods for making low work function electrodes either made from or coated with an electride material in which the electride material has lattice defect sites are described. Lattice defect sites are regions of the crystal structure where irregularities and deformations occur. Also provided are methods for making electrodes which consist of a substrate coated with a layer of a compound comprised of a cation complexed by an electride former, in which said complex has lattice defect sites. In addition, methods for making electrodes which consist of a bulk metal coated with a layer of an electride former having lattice defect sites are described. The electride former stabilizes the loss of electrons by surface sites on the metal, lowering the work-function of the coated surface.
