摘要： A method for manufacturing a honeycomb structure includes a molding step of manufacturing a pillar-shaped honeycomb molded body by using a raw material composition, and a firing step of carrying out a firing treatment on the honeycomb molded body to manufacture a honeycomb fired body. The pillar-shaped honeycomb molded body has a large number of cells disposed in substantially parallel with one another in a longitudinal direction with a cell wall therebetween. The raw material composition includes inorganic particles, at least one of inorganic fibers and inorganic whiskers, and an inorganic binder. The inorganic particles include secondary particles formed by an agglomeration of primary particles. An average particle diameter of the inorganic binder in the raw material composition is about 1/200 to about 1/40 of an average particle diameter of the inorganic particles.

The walls have a thickness of from about 0.10 mm to about 0.50 mm and extend along a longitudinal direction of the honeycomb structure to define through-holes. The honeycomb structure has a center area inside a boundary line passing through positions located at substantially a half of a length from a center of the honeycomb structure to a periphery of the honeycomb structure in a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. The honeycomb structure has a peripheral area outside the boundary line. A thickness of the walls located in the peripheral area is larger than a thickness of the walls located in the center area. A first opening ratio in the center area in the cross section is larger than a second opening ratio in the peripheral area in the cross section.

The center area has a smaller similarity shape in relation to a peripheral shape of the honeycomb structure in a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. The smaller similarity shape is defined by including a center of the honeycomb structure and substantially a half of a length from the center to the peripheral shape of the honeycomb structure. The outer peripheral area is located outside the smaller similarity shape. An aperture ratio of the honeycomb structure is from approximately 50% to approximately 65% in the cross section of the honeycomb structure. The aperture ratio includes a first aperture ratio in the outer peripheral area and a second aperture ratio in the center area. The first aperture ratio is larger than the second aperture ratio.

The honeycomb unit includes plural cell walls to define plural cells, about 61 to about 70 mass % of zeolite, about 15 to about 25 mass % of an inorganic fiber, and about 10 to about 20 mass % of alumina other than alumina included in the zeolite and the inorganic fiber. The honeycomb unit has an opening ratio (%) of about 57% or more. The opening ratio is equal to or less than y shown in a formula of y=0.55x+30 when a content x (mass %) of the zeolite included in the honeycomb unit is less than about 66 mass %. The opening ratio is equal to or less than y shown in a formula of y 32 −0.25x+82.8 when the content x (mass %) is about 66 mass % or more.
