A biaxially oriented laminate film including a core layer including a blend of crystalline polylactic acid polymer and a metal salt phosphorus-containing compound nucleating agent which is biaxially oriented at low transverse direction orientation temperatures to impart a degree of cavitation around the metal salt phosphorus-containing metal such that a white opaque cavitated appearance and a lower film density and improved mechanical properties are obtained. The laminate film could further have additional layers such as a heat sealable layer disposed on one side of said core layer including an amorphous polylactic acid resin and/or a polylactic acid resin-containing layer disposed on the side of the core layer opposite the heat sealable layer, a metal layer, or combinations thereof.

Films and formulations that include recycled polylactic acid resin are described. The films and formulations include, for example, 1-10 wt % of an ethylene-acrylate copolymer. The use of the ethylene-acrylate compolymer in the polylactic acid formulations allows for recycling of PLA-based films and articles with minimum degradation, as exhibited by changes in intrinsic viscosity and color properties.

The present invention relates to methods of manufacturing multi-layered polyolefin films that provide excellent adhesion to cold seal cohesive formulations. A surface of the film is discharge-treated. It has been found that when the discharge-treated surface has at least 0.3% nitrogen functional groups, it provides an excellent cold seal receptive surface. A biaxially oriented polypropylene film made according the invention may also have a second skin layer, opposite the first layer, which may be used for metallizing, laminating, or printing.
