Novel compounds derived from traditional semi- drying and non-drying oils featuring internally plasticizing and crosslinkable properties are disclosed and claimed. Preferred embodiments include acrylate or methacrylate esters of hydroxy long-chain olefinic compounds derived from castor oil or lesquerella oil. A process for the preparation of the novel compounds is also disclosed, which involves esterification reaction of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids or its derivatives with substituted hydroxy long-chain olefinic compounds. These compounds are suitable for forming latices, which form films at low minimum film forming temperatures (MFT) ranging from −5 to 10° C. and cure to above ambient glass transition (Tg) polymers without the use of traditional organic cosolvents which contribute to environmental pollution via volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. These latices are therefore useful in waterborne coatings, contact and pressure sensitive adhesives, and inks.

Novel organosilane derivatized long-chain compounds containing halosilane and hydroxysilane groups are disclosed and claimed. A process for the syntheses of these novel compositions is also disclosed, which involves simple one-pot hydrosilylation reaction of substituted halosilanes with substituted long-chain olefinic compounds, and subsequent hydrolysis to form surface active silanol derivatives. Preferred embodiments include organosilane derivatives of fatty acids derived from tung oil, high erucic acid rape seed oil, and linseed oil. These compositions feature high surface activity in forming stable organic/water emulsions of various difficultly emulsifiable materials as compared with conventional emulsifying agents. These compositions are useful as reactive-dispersants, defoamers, reactive-surfactants in emulsion polymerization, crosslinkers, film formers, gloss enhancers, anticorrosive additives, adhesion promoters and as general property enhancers in coatings, adhesives and inks. These compositions contribute zero volatile organic components (VOC) to these formulations.

A lactone chain-extended polyester polyol of the present invention comprises the reaction product of a lactone and a previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound may comprise the reaction product of (i) a lactone or an alkoxylating agent selected from the group consisting of alkylene oxides and alkylene carbonates, and (ii) a phenolic aralkylation polymer comprising the reaction product of a phenolic monomer having at least two free reactive positions; a styrene derivative; and a coupling agent. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound also may be chain-extended by reacting with a lactam to produce a lactam chain-extended polyester polyamide. The polyols and polyamides of the present invention provide unique combinations of hard and soft functionalities, which translates into materials exhibiting a unique combination of toughness and hardness. These materials are especially suitable for use in high solids coatings and in the development of resins which can be readily processed into thermoset resins. The materials also may function as compatibilizers for thermoplastics.

A poly(methylene oxalate) polymer [poly(oxy(1,2-dioxo-1,2-ethanediyl)oxymethylene)], a bis(tetrabutylammonium) oxalate salt, methods of synthesis thereof and methods of use. Poly(methylene oxalate) is insoluble in all common organic solvents, does not melt and is resistant to fire. Applications are as a light-weight material for use at high temperatures, e.g. as a structural material in aircraft and space vehicles, as a binder for brake systems, and as an insulator for microelectronic components.
