摘要: An in-cylinder injection type internal combustion engine, which includes a main fuel injection control unit that drives a fuel injector to inject fuel directly into a combustion chamber, is provided so that premixed combustion or stratified charge combustion takes place depending upon operating conditions of the engine. The engine further includes an additional fuel injection control unit that drives the fuel injector to inject additional fuel during an expansion stroke after the fuel injector is driven by the main fuel injection control unit, when it is necessary to increase the temperature of a catalyst provided in an exhaust passage for purifying exhaust gas. An exhaust manifold includes an exhaust chamber, in which the exhaust gas remains, and the additional fuel that is left unburned is re-burned in the exhaust chamber.

摘要: An internal combustion engine according to this invention is provided with intake ports each of which is formed to guide a flow of inducted air in a particular direction. Each intake port includes, in the vicinity of its corresponding intake opening to a combustion chamber, a bent port portion bent at a greater curvature than a port portion on a side upstream of the bent port portion. The bent port portion has a greater inner diameter than the inner diameter of the corresponding intake opening, whereby air can be inducted in a sufficient amount without deterioration to the directing function for air to be inducted into the combustion chamber.

摘要: A stratified burning internal combustion engine according to this invention is equipped with an intake port and a fuel feed device so that stratified tumble flows of different fuel concentrations can be formed in a combustion chamber. An ignition device is provided in the combustion chamber to ignite at least one of the tumble flows, said at least one tumble flow being rich in fuel. To promote the stratified tumble flows, a top wall of a piston has an inclined wall. This makes it possible to strengthen the tumble flows, whereby the stratification of an air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber can be improved further to permit lean burn at a larger air/fuel ratio.

摘要: An internal combustion engine according to this invention is provided with intake ports and an injector. The intake ports are designed to form stratified tumble flows of different fuel concentrations in a combustion chamber. A spark plug is arranged in the combustion chamber to ignite one of the tumble flows, which one tumble flow is rich in fuel. Each intake port is provided with a longitudinal partition which divides an interior of the intake port into two passages. These longitudinal partitions are formed in such a way that, of the air-fuel tumble flows formed around the spark plug, the tumble flow closest to the spark plug is formed of a richer air-fuel mixture. Each longitudinal partition is arranged only on a side upstream of a valve stem of an intake valve in the corresponding intake port, so that a sufficient amount of intake air can be obtained while extremely minimizing a reduction in the actual cross-sectional flow area.

It is an object of the present invention to increase the strength of tumbling without lowering the maximum flow rate. An intake port (44) is constructed broader in a tumble-flow-side half (44a) than in the other half (44b) to have an intake air flow through the intake port (44) off-centered toward the side of a tumble flow, whereby an intake air flow from the intake port (44) promotes the tumble flow.

摘要: A method of purifying an exhaust gas, includes: disposing a NOx trapping catalyst in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine, the NOx trapping catalyst including: a metal substrate including cells, a corner portion of each of cells having an acute angle; and a catalyst layer supported in the metal substrate and including a noble metal, a heat-resistant inorganic oxide and a NOx trapping material, the catalyst layer having pores formed by addition of a pore formation promoting material, and the NOx trapping catalyst: adsorbing NOx in the exhaust gas when an exhaust air-fuel ratio is in a lean state; and desorbing and reducing the adsorbed NOx when the exhaust air-fuel ratio is in a stoichiometric state or a rich state; and removing the NOx by the exhaust air-fuel ratio being shifted between the lean state and the rich state.

摘要: An exhaust gas purifying catalyst which is disposed in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine, includes: a substrate; and a catalyst layer, supported in the substrate and including: noble metals including platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd); a heat-resistant inorganic oxide; and a NOx trapping material. The exhaust gas purifying catalyst adsorbs NOx in an exhaust gas when an exhaust air-fuel ratio is in a lean state and desorbs and reduces the adsorbed NOx when the exhaust air-fuel ratio is in a stoichiometric state or a rich state. (Pt/Pd) which is a ratio of amount of the platinum (Pt) to amount of the palladium (Pd) is 0.7 or more and less than 1.0.

摘要: It is an object of the present invention to provide an exhaust gas purifying catalyst formed as a single catalyst that has a great deal of flexibility when being assembled into an exhaust system and that is capable of executing both an NOx absorbing function and a three-way function in a desired manner. To attain the this object, an absorbent catalyst layer to which an absorbent agent such as potassium and an acid material such as zeolite are added, an absorbent agent block layer formed of zeolite, and a three-way catalyst layer to which an acid material such as phosphorus is added are bonded together on a cordierite carrier. The acid material in the absorbent catalyst layer and the absorbent agent block layer inhibit the movement of the absorbent agent to the three-way catalyst layer, and transform the absorbent agent into harmless and stable potassium phosphate even if the absorbent agent reaches the three-way catalyst.

This reduces the permeation of the absorbing agent added to the catalyst layer into a carrier, the evaporation and splash of the absorbing agent from the catalyst, and the deterioration in the durability and the exhaust gas purifying performance of the catalyst.
