The invention concerns amphiphilic compounds of general formula (I), in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 each represent a C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 hydrocarbon residue, R.sup.2 is a spacer and X and Y are functional groups. The proposed compounds have at least two hydrophilic and at least two hydrophobic groups based on dicarboxylic acid diamides. The amphiphilic compounds according to the invention are mostly surface-active and are especially suitable for use as emulsifiers, demulsifies, detergents, dispergents and hydrotropic agents in industry and households, for example, in the treatment of metals, ore processing, surface finishing, washing, cleaning, cosmetics, medicine and food processing and preparation.

A method for synthesizing enantiomerically enriched chemical intermediates with predetermined chirality is described. The method comprises formation of a pseudoephedrine amide, followed by stereoselective alkylation at the alpha carbon. The chiral auxiliary can then be cleaved off, affording chiral end products useful for further transformations. The enantiomeric enrichment of the chiral end products may exceed 98%, and the chiral auxiliary can be recovered. Novel amides of pseudoephedrine used in this method are also disclosed.

Novel fatty amines, amides and salts thereof may be made from the reaction of polyoxyalkylenepolyamine residues with fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters under relatively mild reaction conditions in the absence of a catalyst. Remarkably, the residues or bottoms products from the synthesis of polyoxyalkylenepolyamines, such as triethylene glycol diamine and tetraethylene glycol diamine, also known as JEFFAMINE.RTM. EDR amines, may be reacted with the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters to give materials useful in corrosion inhibitors, pigment wetting agents, mineral flotation and flocculation aids, asphalt emulsifiers, surfactants, detergents, petroleum additives, etc.

N—[N-(3,3-dimethylbutyl)-L-α-aspartyl]-L-phenylalanine 1-methyl ester is produced by hydrogenation of L-α-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine 1-methyl ester and 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde produced in situ by the hydrolysis or cleavage of a 3,3-dimethylbutyraldehyde precursor. The production method is efficient and low cost, as compared with conventional N—[N-(3,3-dimethylbutyl)-L-α-aspartyl]-L-phenylalanine 1-methyl ester synthesis.
