The part plate defines a portion of a chamber for supplying a vapor coating. Each spud site has a tube and a first moldable sealant is arranged around the tube. Each manifold has at least one supply tube extending from the manifold to supply vapor into a respective hollow article. Each manifold has a feed tube extending from the manifold to supply vapor into the manifold. The tube of each spud site is inserted into the feed tube of the respective manifold and an end of the feed tube remote from the manifold locates in the first moldable sealant. A second moldable sealant is arranged around the at least one supply tube of the respective manifold and between the respective manifold and hollow article.

A method of simultaneously applying three different diffusion aluminide coatings to a metal part with an external surface and internal passageways includes first placing the part in an enclosed retort. Areas of the part are then coated with aluminum containing slurry for a first diffusion aluminide coating. Interior walls of the retort are then coated with a vapor source slurry for a second vapor phase aluminide coating on the surface of the part. Areas on the surface of the part not requiring coating are coated with masking materials. A closed chamber inside the retort containing source material for a third vapor phase diffusion aluminide coating for the internal passageways is then attached to the internal passageways. The retort is then placed in a furnace under a protective atmosphere and subjected to a diffusion heat treat to coat the external surfaces and internal passageways with the three different aluminide coatings.

A turbine engine rotor component, such as a compressor or turbine disk or seal element, is protected from corrosion by implanting aluminum or chromium ions, or mixtures thereof, on the surface of the component. Additional metal ions, such as rare earth and reactive elements, may also be implanted on the surface of the component. The component may be heated in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at a specified temperature and time to diffuse the ions into the surface. The component is typically then heated or maintained at an elevated temperature in the presence of oxygen to form an oxide coating on the surface of the component.

The outer and inner surfaces of the workpieces are linked with one another by bores. The workpieces are arranged in a container which is located in a processing chamber. The workpiece holders are arranged at a geodetically low height with respect to a donor metal body. The donor metal body made of granulates, sintered metal or compact metal completely surrounds the outer surfaces of each workpiece to be coated while maintaining a gap. The device is suitable for the inner and outer coating of power unit blades with cooling air bores.

Apparatus and method for simultaneously coating interior and exterior surfaces of articles, such as advanced turbine airfoils, the interior surfaces defined by narrow, complex passageways. The apparatus and method, in addition to providing for simultaneous coating of interior and exterior surfaces, also permits additional control over the coating process by permitting control over the partial pressure of reactive gas introduced into the reaction chamber. The apparatus also permits for subsequent thermal treatment of the coated parts in an inert gas atmosphere with no intermediate cooling step thereby reducing costs while eliminating the potential for damage due to handling by the elimination of at least one handling operation.

This invention relates generally to a novel directed metal oxidation process which is utilized to produce self-supporting bodies. In some of the more specific aspects of the invention, a parent metal (e.g., a parent metal vapor) is induced to react with at least one solid oxidant-containing material to result in the directed growth of a reaction product which is formed from a reaction between the parent metal and the solid oxidant-containing material. The inventive process can be utilized to form bodies having substantially homogeneous compositions, graded compositions, and macrocomposite bodies.

Used aluminized jet engine hot section members can be reconditioned by a fluoridizing treatment that deoxidizes and also removes residual aluminizing, so that the members can then be repaired if necessary and re-aluminized.
