Abstract: Provided are catalyst composites whose catalytic material is effective to substantially simultaneously oxidize carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and reduce nitrogen oxides. The catalyst composites have a two-metal layer on a carrier, the two-metal layer comprising a rhodium component supported by a first support comprising a refractory metal oxide component or a first ceria-zirconia composite; a palladium component supported by a second support comprising a second ceria-zirconia composite; one or more of a promoter, stabilizer, or binder; wherein the amount of the total of the first and second ceria-zirconia composites in the two-metal layer is equal to or greater than the amount of the refractory metal oxide component. Methods of making and using the same are also provided.

Abstract: Provided are processes for the production of particles of catalytic material for emissions control obtainable in one-step from flame spray pyrolysis of precursor-containing dispersion(s), the method comprising: (1) providing a dispersion comprising one or more disperse phases and a continuous phase, the dispersion comprising: (a) a precursor compound of a first platinum group metal and a precursor compound of a first support, and (b) a precursor compound of a second platinum group metal and a precursor compound of a second support, wherein (a) is in a first phase that is different from a second phase containing (b); (2) forming an aerosol of the dispersion provided in step (1); and (3) pyrolyzing the aerosol of step (2) to obtain the particles of catalytic material. The catalytic particles comprise more than one support material and more than one platinum group metal, for use as, for example, three-way conversion (TWC) catalysts.

Abstract: Catalyzed particulate filters comprise three-way conversion (TWC) catalytic material that permeates walls of a particulate filter such that the catalyzed particulate filter has a coated porosity that is less than an uncoated porosity of the particulate filter. The coated porosity is linearly proportional to a washcoat loading of the TWC catalytic material. A coated backpressure is non-detrimental to performance of the engine. Such catalyzed particulate filters may be used in an emission treatment system downstream of a gasoline direct injection engine for treatment of an exhaust stream comprising hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates.

Abstract: Catalytic materials for exhaust gas purifying catalyst composites comprise platinum group metal (PGM)-containing catalysts whose PGM component(s) are provided as nanoparticles and are affixed to a refractory metal oxide, which may be provided as a precursor. Upon calcination of the catalysts, the PGM is thermally affixed to and well-dispersed throughout the support. Excellent conversion of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides can advantageously be achieved using such catalysts.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a three-way conversion (TWC) catalyst composition, and a catalyst article comprising such a catalyst composition suitable for at least partial conversion of gaseous hydrocarbons (HCs), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Generally, the catalyst article includes a catalyst substrate having a plurality of channels adapted for gas flow, each channel having a wall surface and a catalytic coating on the surfaces or inside the pores of the wall. The catalytic coating generally includes a first washcoat with a platinum group metal (PGM) component and a first refractory metal oxide support and a second washcoat having a plurality of palladium-rhodium nanoparticles and a second refractory metal oxide support.

Abstract: Provided are composites of mixed metal oxides comprising: a ceria-zirconia-alumina composite, wherein the alumina is present in an amount in the range of 1 to less than 30% by weight of the composite and the mixed metal oxide composite has a ceria reducibility of at least 50% after 12 hours of hydrothermal aging at 1050° C. In preparation thereof, a ceria-zirconia solid solution can optionally further comprise at least one rare earth oxide other than ceria and the alumina may be formed by using a colloidal alumina precursor. Methods of making and using these composites are also provided.

Abstract: Described are catalysts effective to abate NOx, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide from a gasoline engine exhaust gas. Such catalysts include a substrate having a first and second material disposed thereon, the first material effective to catalyze selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides in the presence of ammonia and the second material effective to abate hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, the first material comprising a molecular sieve promoted with copper and/or iron in a low loading, the second material comprising at least one oxide of Ni, Fe, Mn, Co, and Cu on a support selected from oxides of Ce, Ce—Zr, Zr, Mn, Pr and combinations thereof. Also described are gasoline engine exhaust gas treatment systems and methods of treating exhaust gas from a gasoline engine.

Abstract: An emissions treatment system for an exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine including hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides is provided. The disclosed system can include an exhaust conduit in fluid communication with the internal combustion engine via an exhaust manifold; a first three-way conversion catalyst (TWC-1) located downstream of the internal combustion engine in the exhaust conduit; an SCR-HCT catalyst comprising a selective catalytic reduction catalyst and a hydrocarbon trap downstream of the TWC-1 in the exhaust conduit; and a third catalyst downstream of the SCR-HCT combination in the exhaust conduit, the third catalyst comprising a platinum group metal (PGM) e.g., in an amount effective to oxidize hydrocarbons. Methods of making and using such systems and components thereof are also provided.
