The present invention involves a process and system for producing spherical BNxOy particles that are converted to crystalline BN. The process involves adding a boron compound to an aqueous solution, creating an aerosol spray from the solution in the form of aerosol droplets using an aerosol generator. The aerosol droplets are fed with an inert carrier gas into a heated furnace at a preset flow rate while simultaneously injecting a gaseous nitriding agent into the heated furnace in a direct proportion to the flow rate of the carrier gas containing the aerosol droplets whereby a precursor of spherically shaped BNxOy particles are formed which are further heat treated into particles of spherically shaped BN having a turbostratic or hexagonal structure.

Nanoscale non-stoichiometric materials with unusual properties are disclosed. These materials offer a wide range of novel formulations for applications in catalysis, chemicals and fuels, electronics, electromagnetics, photonics, optics, sensors, electrochemical products, structural products, biomedical engineering, acoustics, composites, and other applications. Illustrative methods and processes are disclosed to highlight catalytic properties and electrical properties and to process these materials from powder or porous forms into dense forms and shapes. The invention includes a non-stoichiometric composition of a material, preferably in nanostructured form, for various applications including, but not limited to, methods to reduce the sintering temperature, the sintering time, or both.

A solid acid-base catalyst contains vanadium pentoxide hydrate. Moreover, it is preferable that the vanadium pentoxide hydrate in the solid acid-base catalyst has a composition which is represented by the following general equation (1):V2O5.nH2Onullnull(1)(n: 0.1-3). Creation of the vanadium pentoxide hydrate was confirmed by measuring X-ray diffraction spectrum shown in FIG. 1. In accordance with the above arrangement, the solid acid-base catalyst can sufficiently display catalytic activity under mild conditions, and it can be suitably applied to various reactions, such as the syntheses of olefins or ethers through dehydration reactions of alcohols, the syntheses of aldehydes or ketones through dehydrogenation reactions of alcohols, hydrations and isomerization reactions of olefins, alkylations, esterifications, amidations, acetalizations, aminations, hydrogen shift reactions, aldol condensation reactions and polymerization reactions.
