The present invention relates to coatings comprising polyethylene glycol and at least one polyphenolic polymer. In particular, the polyphenolic polymer could be selected from the group consisting of tyrosine-derived polyarylates, linear polyesteramides, dihydroxybenzoate polymers, and resorcinol-derived polymers. The coating of the present invention may also include a drug, such as an antibiotic. The coatings of the present invention are suitable for use as coatings for medical devices, such as orthopedic pins or stents.

Antimicrobial compositions, especially those useful when applied topically, particularly to mucosal tissues (i.e., mucous membranes), including a cationic antiseptic such as biguanides and bisbiguanides such as chlorhexidine and its various salts including but not limited to the digluconate, diacetate, dimethosulfate, and dilactate salts; polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds such as polyhexamethylenebiguanide; silver and various silver complexes; small molecule quaternary ammonium compounds such as benzalkoium chloride and alkyl substituted derivatives; di-long chain alkyl (C8-C18) quaternary ammonium compounds; cetylpyridinium halides and their derivatives; benzethonium chloride and its alkyl substituted derivatives; and octenidine. The compositions can also include an enhancer component, a surfactant, a hydrophobic component, and/or a hydrophilic component. Such compositions provide effective topical antimicrobial activity and are accordingly useful in the treatment and/or prevention of conditions that are caused, or aggravated by, microorganisms (including viruses).

The methods include applying a pharmaceutical composition that includes a first precursor material agent including fibrinogen, a second precursor material agent including thrombin, and silver particles to an abdominal incision site in an amount effective to treat the abdominal incision site. Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions and devices for use in the subject methods.

Methods and systems for killing or inhibiting pathogens present in treatments area including but not limited to the nasal cavity, the vaginal area, and the anal area. The methods feature introducing a substrate with an antimicrobial metal into the treatment area. The substrate may be coated, lined, plated, or clad with the antimicrobial metal, either partially or entirely. Or, the substrate itself may be an antimicrobial metal. Antimicrobial metals include but are not limited to copper, zinc, silver, gold, and certain metal alloys. The step of directly contacting the substrate with antimicrobial metal to the treatment area kills or inhibits present pathogens. The antimicrobial metal may leave a trace amount of residue, which may continue to kill or inhibit pathogens after the system has been removed from the treatment area or penetrate into deeper layers of the treatment area.
