Control signals are supplied to the conductive pads through complimentary transistors comprise a p-channel field effect transistor and an n-channel field effect transistor connected between VDD and VSS lines of a control circuit, which also supplies a bias voltage to the back electrode and gate control signals to the gate terminals of the p-channel field effect transistor and the n-channel field effect transistor. During operation, the bias voltage is inverted in order to invert the polarity of control signal applied across the light influencing medium.

An electro-optical device and a method of fine gradation display by an electro-optical device are disclosed. In case of driving each picture element of the active matrix type electro-optical device, a visual gradation display can be carried out by using transfer gate complementary field effect transistors, in a structure where one of the input and output terminals thereof is connected with a picture element electrode, by applying a voltage to the other terminal, and by applying a bipolar pulse to a control electrode at a certain timing and cutting the voltage at the same time, and whereby controlling the time for applying voltage to the picture element, while a visual gradation display can also be carried out in a structure where one of the input and output terminals of the device is connected with the picture element, by applying the bipolar pulse to the control electrode at a certain timing and by applying a voltage as a function of time to the other terminal at the same time, and whereby applying the voltage determined thereby to the picture element.

The display comprises a light influencing layer, an electrode pad located adjacent to the layer at one side of the layer in order to define a pixel in the layer, an n-channel field effect transistors connected to the electrode pad at its source terminal, a p-channel field effect transistors connected to the electrode pad at its source terminal, a first control line connected to the drain terminal of the n-channel field effect transistor, a second control line connected to the drain terminal of the p-channel field effect transistor, a third control line connected to the gate terminals of the n-channel field effect transistor and the p-channel field effect transistor, and a control circuit for supplying control signals to the first, second and third control lines. By this configuration, the voltage of the electrode pad can be arbitrarily controlled by adjusting the input level at the gate terminals.

The first substrate is placed over the second substrate with a UV light curable adhesive between them. The UV light curable adhesive carries first and second particles dispersed therein. The first and second substrates are pressed against each other and exposed to UV light in order to harden the adhesive. The first particles are made from conductive particles and preferably resilient and function to form current paths between the electrodes of the first and second substrates. The second particles function to prevent the first particles from being destroyed by excess deformation.

The device comprises a liquid crystal panel and an auxiliary panel formed with an IC circuit for supplying driving signals to the liquid crystal device. The auxiliary substrate is separately provided with the circuit and the function thereof is tested in advance of the assembling with the liquid crystal panel. By this procedure, the yield is substantially improved.
