A trocar fixation device includes a cannula and an elongate tube mounted onto and coupled to the exterior surface of the cannula with the distal end of the cannula extending distally beyond the distal end of the elongate tube. The elongate tube includes a plurality of slits cut at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the elongate tube. The trocar fixation device is activated by rotating the proximal-end region of the elongate tube in a first direction and is deactivated by rotating the proximal-end region of the elongate tube in a second direction, opposite to the first direction. Activation of the trocar fixation device compresses the material positioned between adjacent slits and forces the material radially outwardly, away from the exterior surface of the cannula, thereby forming ridges. Deactivation of the trocar fixation device returns the exterior surface of the elongate tube to a substantially smooth condition.

The invention relates to a hand access laparoscopy device having a gelcap, a retainer, a sleeve and a retention ring. The gelcap includes gel that is bonded to a cap. The cap includes an inner cylindrical wall to which the gel in bonded, thereby providing a sealing area between the device and the wound in a body wall. By securing the gel to the inner cylindrical wall, the thickness of the gel and corresponding cap is minimized along with the overall footprint of the device. With the gel thickness reduced and able to be substantially flush, the “doming” phenomenon produced by insufflation of a patient's abdomen is reduced.

The invention is directed to a trocar adapted to form a seal around a surgical instrument, the trocar comprising a cannula having an axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end; a housing having a proximal wall and forming with the cannula a working channel sized and configured to receive the instrument; a septum seal disposed in the housing and extending transverse to the axis of the cannula across the working channel, the septum seal having a normal state when the instrument is absent from the working channel and a stretched state when the instrument is being withdrawn from the working channel; portions of the proximal wall of the housing defining an orifice sized and configured to receive the instrument into the working channel; and an elastomeric ring-shaped projection extending axially distally between the proximal wall and the septum seal, the ring-shaped projection having an axial length adapted to deform to prevent inversion and binding of the septum seal and the orifice upon withdrawal of the surgical instrument. In particular, the septum seal is prevented from reaching the orifice in the proximal wall of the housing when the instrument is withdrawn. The projection may be bonded, insert-molded, or compressively fitted to the proximal wall of the housing. The projection may be formed of an elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber. The projection may further comprise a plurality of portions or fingers extending axially distally from the proximal wall, each of the extending portions or fingers may further include a living hinge. In another aspect, the ring-shaped projection may be formed on the surface of the septum seal instead of the proximal wall of the housing. That is, the ring-shaped projection may be formed to extend axially proximally from the surface of the septum seal toward the proximal wall of the housing.

Enzyme activity levels within living cells, such as Serine proteases, can be key determinates in assessing; 1) the presence of tumor (cancer) cells, 2) the predictive efficacy of a chemotherapeutic treatment regimen using a particular therapeutic agent or process, 4) the probability of graft rejection or acceptance, and 5) the disease state status of a cell. The identification of the up or down regulation relationships of serine proteases within living cell systems, provides a rapid, yet finely tuned mechanism for predicting the current and future physiological state of these cell populations.

Isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding human MEKK proteins, and isolated MEKK proteins, are provided. The invention further provides antisense nucleic acid molecules, recombinant expression vectors containing a nucleic acid molecule of the invention, host cells into which the expression vectors have been introduced and non-human transgenic animals carrying a human MEKK transgene. The invention further provides human MEKK fusion proteins and anti-human MEKK antibodies. Methods of using the human MEKK proteins and nucleic acid molecules of the invention are also disclosed, including methods for detecting human MEKK activity in a biological sample, methods of modulating human MEKK activity in a cell, and methods for identifying agents that modulate the activity of human MEKK.

The system in one aspect comprises at least two communications devices connected to the system, the communications devices having at least a microprocessor, a data-input mechanism, a display screen, a wireless local-area-network protocol application enhanced with short-wave radio communication capability installed per instance to each of the devices, and a profile comparison and matching application installed per instance to each of the devices. When any two of the devices come into short-wave radio range of each other, the devices activated, a wireless local-area-network is established and the in-range devices swap profiles, which are compared to profiles held locally on each device such that a profile match registering on at least one device enables the device matching the profile to signal the sending device of the matched profile in order to request communication between the devices.
