The polyfunctionalized monomer may be polymerized to form a polyfunctionalized polymer which may be further reacted with one or more additional reagents. This invention relates to a composition prepared by reacting (A) a boron compound and (B) a phospholipid. These phospholipids are useful as lubricant additives for oil-base and water-base functional fluids. These materials act as anti-wear and/or extreme pressure agents. Further, these materials when incorporated into aqueous compositions have beneficial bacteriostatic effects, i.e., controlling bacterial growth.

This invention relates to improved grease compositions comprising a major amount of an oil based simple metal soap thickened base grease and a minor amount of at least one phosphorus and boron containing composition, said phosphorus and boron containing composition prepared by reacting a combination of (A) at least one boron compound and (B) at least one phospholipid. In one embodiment, the phosphorus and boron containing composition is present in amounts sufficient to improve the extreme pressure, antiwear and lubricity properties of the base grease. In another embodiment the phosphorus and boron containing composition is present in amounts sufficient to increase the dropping point of the base grease, as determined by ASTM procedure D-2265, by at least 20.degree. C.

This invention relates to lubricating compositions containing hydroxyalkane phosphonic acids and derivatives thereof.Hydroxyalkane phosponic acids in the present invention can be reacted to form salts with basic materials, including detergents, dispersants and amines. These materials can be particularly useful in lubricating compositions to improve anti-wear and extreme pressure properties of lubricating formulations.The hydroxyalkane phosphonic acid is represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein Y is a phosphonic acid group or hydrogen, and R is alkyl from 1 to about 100 carbon atoms.

Compositions useful as pour point depressants, novel compounds within such compositions, and processes for making same, as well as lubricant oil compositions containing same, are disclosed. The novel compounds are encompassed by the general structural formula (I) ##STR1## wherein the Ar, Ar' and Ar" are independently an aromatic moiety containing 1 to 3 aromatic rings and each aromatic moiety is substituted with 0 to 3 substituents, (R) and (R') are independently an alkylene group containing about 1 to 100 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one of (R) or (R') is CH.sub.2, and n is 0 to about 1000; with the proviso that if n is 0, then (R) is CH.sub.2 and each aromatic moiety is independently substituted with 0 to 3 substituents with one aromatic moiety having at least one substituent, the substituents being selected from the group consisting of a substituent derived from an olefin and a substituent derived from a chlorinated hydrocarbon. The composition of the invention includes compounds varying in molecular weight from about 271 to about 300,000.
