Abstract: A device provides a first data signal that indicates an activity of at least one muscle of a patient that is relevant for an inspiratory breathing effort and a second data signal that indicates an activity of at least one muscle of the patient that is relevant for an expiratory breathing effort. The data signals are generated from electromyography (EMG) signals detected by surface electromyography sensors. A computer is configured to determine breathing phase information on the basis of a breathing signal and to check at least one of the electromyography signals or at least one of the separated signals for detectability of a heart signal component and further to assign the signals to an inspiratory breathing activity as well as to an expiratory breathing activity of the patient as a function of the breathing phase information.

Abstract: An endotracheal tube electrode assembly comprises an elongated electrode body, a plurality of electrodes and a layer of insulating material. The elongated electrode body has a semi-circular cross-sectional shape defining an endotracheal tube-receiving channel that extends along a length of the elongated electrode body. The plurality of electrodes is provided on a surface of the elongated electrode body outside of the endotracheal tube-receiving channel. The electrodes extend along a length of the elongated electrode body. Each of the electrodes is formed from a conductive material applied directly onto the elongated electrode body. The layer of insulating material formed on the elongated electrode body covering a portion of each one of the electrodes, thereby providing an uncovered portion of the at least one pair of electrodes to serve as a patient contacting thereof.

Abstract: A ventilatory assist system and method are disclosed. The system comprises a tube for connection to a patient's airway, inspiratory and expiratory tube lumens connected to the tube, an inspiratory air source connected to the inspiration tube lumen, and a controller of air pressure in the expiratory tube lumen. The pressure controller is responsive to a physiological breathing signal representative of patient's inspiratory effort to allow air flow through the expiratory tube lumen during a patient's expiration phase, partially restricting the air flow through the expiratory tube lumen to a so minimum air flow during a patient's inspiration phase. During both respiratory phases, a unidirectional air flow is produced through the inspiratory and expiratory tube lumens to prevent air expired by the patient from being breathed again. The physiological breathing signal allows synchronization of the ventilatory assist with breathing efforts of the patient.

Abstract: A nerve integrity monitoring device includes a control module and a physical layer module. The control module is configured to generate a payload request. The payload request (i) requests a data payload from a sensor in a wireless nerve integrity monitoring network, and (ii) indicates whether a stimulation probe device is to generate a stimulation pulse. The physical layer module is configured to (i) wirelessly transmit the payload request to the sensor and the stimulation probe device, or (ii) transmit the payload request to a console interface module. The physical layer module is also configured to, in response to the payload request, (i) receive the data payload from the sensor, and (ii) receive stimulation pulse information from the stimulation probe device. The data payload includes data corresponding to an evoked response of a patient. The evoked response is generated based on the stimulation pulse.

Abstract: This invention relates to, among other embodiments, methods and apparatus/systems for controlling gases delivery to a patient, such as via a patient interface. Such methods comprising receiving an input relating to either a patient's breathing phase and/or another patient parameter, controlling a flow of gases to be delivered to the patient and the inclusion in said flow of gases of a supplementary gas, wherein the amount of supplementary gas provided to the patient is substantially synchronized with respect to the patient's breathing phase and/or another patient parameter.

Abstract: Devices and systems with methods for detecting a sealing condition between a patient interface and a patient, and adjusting the patient interface to maintain the patient interface in sealing contact with the patient. The patient interface may include a sealing structure to form a seal on the patient, and a positioning structure to secure the sealing structure to the patient. The patient interface may include a sensor coupled to the sealing structure. A processor determines the sealing condition between the sealing structure and the patient based on a signal from the sensor, and adjusts at least one of the sealing structure and the positioning structure to maintain the sealing structure in sealing contact with the patient. A prediction system predicts a leak between the sealing structure and the patient based on the sensor signal. A learning system learns how to fit the sealing structure to the patient to form a seal.

Abstract: Apparatuses (including devices, kits, and systems) and methods to non-invasively and chemically (rather than thermally) activate thermoreceptors to modulate sleep. For example, described herein are apparatuses including topical compositions that stimulate thermoreceptors on the subject's skin (e.g., forehead, hands, and/or feet) for a period of time to induce a sensation of temperature (heat or cold) without significantly altering the person's actual skin temperature to improve sleep quality, including reducing sleep-onset latency, enhancing depth of sleep, and/or extending the amount of time a subject sleeps. The subject may be suffering from insomnia or some other sleep disorder.
