Abstract: The present invention provides a coating composition, a method of coating a substrate, and a coated substrate (e.g., a coated cement fiberboard article). In preferred embodiments the coating composition includes one or more latex polymers and an aliphatic epoxy resin system. The coating composition can include one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers. A coated article comprising a cement fiberboard substrate and a coating system applied to the substrate is also provided. The article includes a first coating system applied to the substrate, wherein the first coating system includes an aliphatic epoxy resin system having an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, optionally a silicate additive, and optionally one or more olefinic compounds and initiator for same. The first coating system preferably includes one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers. In a preferred embodiment, the first coating system is applied to all the surfaces of the substrate (e.g., the front side, back side and edges of a board). The coated substrate may then be coated with other optional coatings, e.g., decorative or protective topcoats.

Abstract: The present invention provides compositions useful as a barrier layer in, for example, packaging products. The compositions generally comprise a blend of (i) a polyester resin, preferably an aromatic polyester resin such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and (ii) a polyamide material (e.g., MXD6). The blend optionally may further comprise (iii) an oxygen scavenging material. The present invention also provides containers (e.g., containers formed by expansion of preforms) having a multilayered body-forming portion including: a core layer comprising the aforementioned blend; and inner and outer layers of a formable polymer composition. The present invention also provides methods of making such containers.

Abstract: Solid extrusion coating compositions for metal substrates, a method of extrusion coating a metal substrate, and a metal article are disclosed. The extrusion coating composition is a thermoplastic material and comprises: (a) a polyester having a weight average molecular weight of about 10,000 to about 50,000, and optionally, (b) a modifying resin, such as an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent weight of about 500 to about 15,000. The extrusion coating composition is applied to a metal substrate in an extrusion process to provide a composition film having a thickness of about 1 to about 40 microns.

Abstract: This invention relates to a novel stack of siding, comprising: first and second coated siding pieces comprising an outer topcoat layer, an inner decorative coating layer and a fiberboard cement substrate layer; and a liner positioned between the first and second coated siding pieces. The siding, during normal transportation and installation, retains an acceptable appearance that is substantially free of viewable scratches or mars. In more preferred embodiments, the outer topcoat layer of the siding has a thickness of at least 8 microns and comprises a polyurethane dispersion. The present invention also provides novel methods of pre-finishing a fiberboard cement siding product, comprising the steps of: providing a fiberboard cement substrate layer; coating a first major surface of the fiberboard cement substrate with a decorative coating; coating the exposed surface of the decorative coating with a topcoat layer; and curing the topcoat layer to provide an abrasion resistant siding. More preferably, the curing step comprises a process that does not require heating the siding to a board surface temperature in excess of 100° C.

Abstract: An improved urethane acrylate gel coat resin, its method of manufacture, and its use in gel coat compositions are disclosed. The urethane acrylate gel coat resin contains terminal acrylate moieties and is the reaction product of an oligoester of weight average molecular weight about 200 to about 4000, a diisocyanate, and a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate. The gel coat resin is used in gel coat compositions that exhibit good weatherability and color stability after cure.
