In a power supply device, bidirectional converters that are each capable of supplying or regenerating an electric charge are provided between an input section for an input voltage and an output section for an output voltage. An amplitude change monitor circuit detects an envelope of an RF input signal. A converter switching circuit controls supply and regeneration of electric charges by the bidirectional converters so that the output voltage follows an amplitude change of the input signal. An output capacitor capacitance estimation unit estimates the capacitance of an output capacitor from its voltage and current. A delay time detection circuit grasps a delay time of a power supply device for a high frequency power amplification circuit and makes an adjustment through a delay adjustment circuit.

An apparatus and method for sensing load current of an envelope tracking (ET) modulator enables load impedance of a power amplifier to be measured. Impairments associated with the load impedance characteristic can be suppressed by calibration and predistortion instead of by feedback (as done in the prior art). The ET modulator provides a switching regulator that can be reconfigured as a linear regulator for the purpose of sensing the load current. This allows the ET modulator to be operated open-loop, thereby eliminating the power consumption overhead resulting from utilization of a loop filter and error amplifier (used in the prior art) and achieving a higher overall efficiency.

A wireless communications device may be include a power amplifier and a processor that is associated with a signal prediction module. In an aspect, the processor may be a modem, a RF chip, etc. In one example, the wireless communications device may be configured to buffer one or more values associated with an input signal. The signal prediction module may be configured to predict a system response to at least a portion of the one or more buffered values, and generate a switcher control signal based on the system response. The signal prediction module may also generate a predicted supply voltage from the values associated with the input signal.

Apparatus and methods for envelope tracking calibration are provided. In one embodiment, a power amplifier system includes a power amplifier, an envelope tracker that generates the power amplifier's supply voltage, a power detector, and a calibration module. The envelope tracker includes an envelope shaping table generated at a desired gain compression and a scaling module that scales an amplitude of an envelope signal. The power detector measures the power amplifier's output power, and the calibration module provides calibration data to the scaling module to change the scaling of the envelope signal's amplitude. The calibration module sets the calibration data to a first value corresponding to a supply voltage level associated with substantially no gain compression, and reduces the supply voltage level by changing the calibration data until the power detector indicates that the gain compression of the power amplifier is about equal to the desired gain compression.
