Abstract:
This invention relates to articles made of polyester, preferably polyethylene terephthalate (PET), having coated directly to at least one of the surfaces thereof one or more layers of thermoplastic material with good gas-barrier characteristics, and novel methods of making such articles. Preferably the barrier-coated articles take the form of preforms coated by at least one layer of barrier material and the containers blow-molded therefrom. Such barrier-coated containers are preferably of the type to hold beverages such as soft drinks, beer or juice. The preferred barrier materials have a lower permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide than PET as well as key physical properties similar to PET. The materials and methods provide that the barrier layers have good adherence to PET, even during and after the blow molding process to form containers from preforms. Preferred barrier coating materials include poly(hydroxyamino ethers). In one preferred method, preforms are injection molded then barrier-coated immediately thereafter.
Abstract:
An improved multi-layer preform is provided which includes: (a) a plastic inner liner, having a cylindrical-walled lower portion and a cylindrical-walled upper portion integral with and extending upwardly from said lower portion, and (b) a molded outer layer. The liner further includes (a) a mount means, such as a generally continuous annular groove, or (b) a vent means, such as a plurality of recesses or grooves positioned circumferentially about the upper portion of the liner, or (c) both a mount means and vent means used in functional combination.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a process for the preparation of a coated oriented plastic container, which comprises coating an aqueous latex or organic solvent solution of a vinylidene chloride copolymer on at least one surface of a parison, preform or sheet for formation of container which is formed by hot molding of a molecularly orientable thermoplastic resin, drying the coated parison, preform or sheet to form a coating layer, and subjecting the formed coated structure to draw molding such as biaxial draw blow molding or draw forming, wherein the coating layer of the vinylidene chloride copolymer is crystallized at the step of forming the coating layer or the draw molding step.In the coated oriented plastic container prepared according to this process, the adhesion of the coating layer of the vinylidene chloride copolymer to the plastic container substrate is highly improved, and even under severe conditions, peeling of the coating layer is prevented. Moreover, the gas barrier property, strength and chemical resistance of the container are prominently improved.
Abstract:
A method for providing a container with one or more layers of barrier material during the production of the container from a thermoplastic. A preform (10) is stretched in its axial direction, generally an amount corresponding to the total axial stretching required for conversion of the preform to a container, after which the stretched preform (11, 13) is provided with one or more barrier layers (12, 14), and the preform is then heated and converted to a container. In one embodiment, the axially stretched preform (15) is produced by assembling axially stretched part-preforms (13a,b) covered with one or more barrier layers. The combined preform is then converted to a container.
Abstract:
Apparatus for producing hollow plastic articles in a hollow die with a relatively smaller reciprocating punch therein. Plastic material is fed from a nozzle aligned with the die, into the die about the punch, the punch being initially advanced into the opening of the die and retracting as the plastic is introduced from the nozzle. When the plastic introduction is completed, then the nozzle is slid laterally on the die until the duct of the nozzle is out of registry with the die and the nozzle thus closes the die. Then the punch is advanced within the closed die to compress the plastic material into the space between the die and the punch.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for the preparation of hollow plastic articles wherein improved temperature control of the parison is obtained by altering the heat content of a parison by a first, temperature controlled mold and core, transferring the parison to a second, temperature controlled mold, and substantially equalizing the temperature distribution of the parison by heat exchange with the second mold.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a preferred mold design for producing plastic, molded preforms, which may be blow-molded into a container of a final, desired shape. A preferred mold includes a temperature control system for maintaining the preform mold at a desired temperature. The temperature control system can pass fluid through channels within the preform mold to cool plastic that is injected into the preform mold. In some arrangements, a mold comprises a neck finish mold, the neck finish mold comprising high heat transfer material positioned to transfer heat away from melt within a mold cavity of the mold.
