An electromagnetic field frequency filter which includes a bus waveguide that carries a signal having a plurality of frequencies, including a desired frequency, and a drop waveguide. A resonator-system is coupled to the bus and drop waveguides via directional couplers and transfers the desired frequency from the bus waveguide to the drop waveguide while allowing transmission of the remaining frequencies in the bus waveguide. The input signal in the bus waveguide is coupled from the bus waveguide to the resonator-system by a first directional coupler. The resonator-system includes two sub-elements each comprising at least one resonator. The first directional coupler splits the input signal into two preferably equal parts and directs each part into a resonator sub-element. The desired frequency is transferred to the drop waveguide by a second directional coupler. The non-desired frequencies are returned to the bus waveguide, in the forward direction, by the first directional coupler.

A system is provided for partially or completely offsetting optical fiber amplifier gain spectrum variations due to temperature by setting the optical pump signal leading into the amplifier to a desired wavelength value. Optical fiber amplifiers have gain spectrum variations associated with temperature and gain spectrum variations associated with the optical pump signal wavelength. By controlling the optical pump signal wavelength supplying the amplifier, the optical fiber amplifier gain variations due to temperature can be partially or completely offset, which helps minimize total amplifier spectral gain variations. The invention is applicable to dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems.

A bandpass optical filter is provided that is formed within an optical fiber in the form of a Bragg grating. The grating includes multiple Fabry Perot cavities disposed along the waveguide. Each of the cavities includes a pair of reflectors. Each reflector comprises alternating high-low index regions within the waveguide, each region having a thickness of one quarter-wave at a bandpass wavelength, each alternate region being of a different index of refraction than an adjacent region. A multiple odd quarter-wave or quarter-wave high or low index region is sandwiched between each pair of reflectors. The number of high/low regions within a reflector is selected in accordance with the refractive index difference between two alternate adjacent regions.

An arrangement for sensing changes in a monitored parameter includes an optical fiber which has at least one sensing fiber length including a sensing portion situated at a monitoring location of a body. Two periodic gratings of the same periodicity are situated in the fiber each at a different end of the sensing fiber length. Such gratings are reflective to a predominant portion of any light that propagates in the fiber and has a wavelength in a stopband range around twice the periodicity. When broadband coherent light including sensing light with wavelengths within the stopband range is launched into a first end of the optical fiber for propagation longitudinally of the fiber toward a first of the gratings, the predominant portion of the sensing light is reflected from the first grating and the remainder of the sensing light passes into the sensing fiber length, where resonant buildup of light at certain wavelengths that are located within the stopband range and depend on the length of the sensing portion as influenced by changes in the monitored parameter takes place, and the gratings are rendered substantially transparent to the sensing light at the plurality of wavelengths following the buildup. The effect of the gratings and of the sensing length on the wavelengths of the light emerging from one of the end portions of the optical fiber is then detected.

Each of the Fabri-Perot resonators may transmit light corresponding to a resonance wavelength of the Fabri-Perot resonator. This invention relates to methods of generating NP gallium nitride (GaN) across large areas (>1 cm2) with controlled pore diameters, pore density, and porosity. Also disclosed are methods of generating novel optoelectronic devices based on porous GaN. Additionally a layer transfer scheme to separate and create free-standing crystalline GaN thin layers is disclosed that enables a new device manufacturing paradigm involving substrate recycling. Other disclosed embodiments of this invention relate to fabrication of GaN based nanocrystals and the use of NP GaN electrodes for electrolysis, water splitting, or photosynthetic process applications.
