    摘要: A recording medium and a picture display system in which multiplexed data recorded on a recording medium sold only in a specified territory or multiplexed data broadcast for a specified territory can be displayed only on a decoding reproducing system sold or installed only in such territory. Multiplexed data including a territory code are recorded on a recording medium. This territory code is compared to the inner territory code in the decoding device and, if the territory code of the recording medium includes the inner territory code of the decoding unit, the recording medium is decoded and reproduced. In the multiplexed data, allowable period data is stated in association with the territory code. This allowed period is compared to the date of a calendar generator in the decoding unit. If the date of the calendar generator is comprised within the allowed period, the recording medium is decoded and reproduced.

    摘要: In a method of compressing a motion picture signal divided into blocks of picture data and in which each of the blocks is selectively compressed by discrete cosine transform (DCT) coding or by intra-block predictive coding which effects non-transform coding (NTC); the intra-block predictive coding is effected by calculating a mean value of the picture data in a flat region of each block, determining a representation value of each block on the basis of the mean value thereof, determining the differences between the representation value for each block and the values of the pixels of picture data in the respective block, quantizing the resulting difference values with a selected quantizing width for generating quantizing coefficients, and variable length coding such quantizing coefficients for each block, the representation value of the respective block and the respective quantizing width. In decoding a bit stream of coded motion picture data, the bit stream is variable length decoded to generate the quantization coefficients for each block, the representation value determined on the basis of the mean value of a flat region in the respective block and information as to the quantizing width for the respective block, and then the generated quantization coefficients are decoded on the basis of the generated representation value and the information as to the quantizing width.

    摘要: A motion vector detection circuit detects the motion vector for each macro-block between an odd field and an even field. An encoding system decision circuit decides the type of the encoding system, that is if the encoding system is a field-based encoding system or a frame-based encoding system, based on a median of a motion vector. A control circuit controls gates and changeover switches, in accordance with the encoding system type as decided by the decision system, for generating a field-based reference picture or a frame-based reference picture from buffer memories. The circuitry from an additive node to a VLC circuit finds difference data between the reference picture and the picture to be encoded, while transforming the difference data by discrete cosine transform and variable length encoding the transformed data. The VLC circuit sets the encoding system type as a flag in a header of a predetermined hierarchical layer of a bit stream. By the above operation, any interlaced picture may be encoded efficiently, whether the picture includes little motion or abundant motion or includes both little motion and abundant motion in combination. A picture data decoding device detects the flag and executes decoding by changing over field-based decoding to frame-based decoding or vice versa depending on the flag for reproducing the picture data.

    摘要: In connection with compression-coding of video signals on the basis of inter-frame correlation, a single reference table is used for variable length encoding of inter-frame motion vectors established on the basis of various motion vector value ranges and degrees of accuracy. A reference table is provided for variable length encoding motion vectors based on a particular value range and degree of accuracy. In order to use the same table for motion vectors based on a larger value range than that for which the table was designed, the value of a motion vector to be encoded is divided to form a quotient and a remainder. An addition bit code is formed on the basis of the remainder and is appended to a variable length code which corresponds in the reference table to the quotient so that a variable length code value is formed for the motion vector based on the larger range. As to motion vectors based on a finer degree of accuracy than was provided for in the reference table, the motion vector value is multiplied by an appropriate factor and the resulting product is used to obtain a corresponding variable length code value from the reference table. Decoding is performed using the same table and by means of decoding operations that are the inverse of the encoding operations.
