Abstract:
A surgical scissors instrument having disposed at its distal end two bipolar electrode structures which function to coagulate tissue immediately prior to its being severed by scissor action. The instrument comprises a first scissors blade having a distal end and a second scissors blade having a distal end, wherein at least one of the blades is pivotable in relation to the other blade. A first electrically insulated bipolar electrode structure is disposed longitudinally distally from the distal end of the first scissors blade, and a second electrically insulated bipolar electrode structure is disposed longitudinally distally from the distal end of the second scissors blade. The instrument thereby permits a physician to precisely apply electrical energy only at the distal end of the scissor's blades, and to thereafter immediately cut coagulated tissue situated immediately forward of the blade members.
Abstract:
A multi-functional surgical device useful, for a-.ample, for male and female sterilization procedures. The device can be used for applying an elastic occluding ring onto an anatomical tubular structure, for cutting and cauterizing the cut ends of such a structure, for introducing a gas and/or anesthesia into the surgical field, for a biopsy procedure, for illuminating and viewing the surgical field, for applying a conventional clip to an anatomical tubular structure, and/or for applying a flexible and resilient ligature. An applicator device for applying a flexible and resilient ligature, plug or cap onto an anatomical tubular structure including tissue grasping forceps moved into and out of the distal end of a tubular member which has one or two anatomical tubular structure receiving slots. A flexible and resilient ligature, plug or cap having legs and a base having sufficient elastic memory to close the legs and occlude an anatomical tubular structure.

Abstract:
A surgical instrument comprising a jaw assembly is disclosed. The surgical instrument further comprises a motor-driven drive system configured to manipulate the jaw assembly. The surgical instrument also comprises a control system configured to control the drive system and, also, control a power supply system configured to supply electrical power to electrodes defined in the jaw assembly. In use, the surgical instrument can be used to apply mechanical energy and electrical energy to the tissue of a patient at the same time, or at different times. In certain embodiments, the user controls when the mechanical and electrical energies are applied. In some embodiments, the control system controls when the mechanical and electrical energies are applied.
Abstract:
Medical devices include a ground link, a first actuator pivotably coupled to the ground link and a first movable element operatively coupled to the first actuator by a linkage. The linkage including: the ground link; a second link that is pivotable with respect to the ground link; a fourth link that is pivotable with respect to the ground link; and a third link having a main body extending from a first portion to a second portion and a blocking tab extending away from the main body. The medical device further including a second actuator operatively coupled to the ground link, the second actuator having a blocking surface including a blocking tab that is positioned to engage with at least a portion of the blocking surface of the second actuator to limit movement of the second actuator until the first actuator is at least partially actuated.
Abstract:
Surgical tools are disclosed that include a first handle having a first recess, a second handle having a second recess, a first tip disposed in the first recess and extending distally, and a second tip disposed in the second recess and extending distally. The first tip has a first external surface and a first internal surface. The second tip has a second external surface and a second internal surface. The surgical tool has a first configuration wherein the surgical tool operates as forceps. The surgical tool has a second configuration wherein the surgical tool operates as scissors. The first internal surface can be moved adjacent to the second internal surface to permit rotation of the first tip relative to the first recess and permit rotation of the second tip relative to the second recess. The rotation of the first tip and the second tip transitions the surgical tool between the first configuration and the second configuration.

Abstract:
A surgical suturing system is disclosed. The surgical suturing system comprises a shaft, a firing drive comprising a motor, and an end effector extending distally from the shaft. The end effector comprises a needle driver configured to be actuated by the motor, wherein the needle driver is configured to drive a needle installed within the end effector. The end effector further comprises a needle track configured to guide the needle installed within the end effector through a needle firing stroke, wherein the end effector is configured to accommodate suturing needles having different sizes. The surgical suturing system further comprises a control circuit configured to sense the size of the suturing needle installed within the end effector and adjust the actuation stroke of the motor to accommodate the size of the needle installed within the end effector.
Abstract:
A forceps having a first jaw and a second jaw, where at least one of the first and second jaws is capable of moving between an open position and a closed positions. The forceps including an inner shaft located within an outer shaft and extending along the longitudinal axis, and a drive bar coupled to and extending distally from the inner shaft. The drive bar including a pair of drive bar struts extending from a distal portion of the inner shaft and positioned laterally inward of at least one of first and second set of flanges of the first and second jaws. A drive pin is securable to the pair of drive bar struts and the drive bar is translatable within the outer shaft to translate the drive pin to move the first jaw and/or the second jaw between open and closed positions.
