A lightweight, high performance, active suspension system utilizing piezoelectric regulated springs, and a method of manufacturing the suspension system, is described. Piezoelectric material is bonded to suspension springs, and excited appropriately to vary the stiffness of the suspension system. A method of controlling the stiffness of a spring includes piezoelectric material bonded to the spring, a sensor system for generating a signal proportional to the loading imposed on the spring, and controller for exciting the piezoelectric material in response to the signal. A control system for controlling the stiffness of a spring including embedding a plurality of piezoelectric particles within an electrically conductive matrix forming the body of the spring is also described.

A piezoelectric pressure control valve (10) comprising a bimorph (48) with a characteristic that as a potential difference is applied thereto, one surface expands and the other contracts, thereby deflecting the bimorph. The valve includes a supply port (14) for introducing fluid and a chamber (16) defined within the valve body. An outlet port (18) is in communication with the chamber. A top valve plate (22) and a contiguous bottom valve plate (24) are supported within the chamber, each valve plate having an anchored end (26, 28) affixed to a wall of the chamber, the anchored end of the top valve plate being provided with an inlet channel (30) in communication with the supply port, and a metering orifice (40, 42) disposed within each valve plate. A double poppet valve head (44) is seatable within the associated metering orifice, the poppet valve head being continuously displaceable between an open position and a normally closed position. The bimorph (48) cooperates with a spring (54) affixed to each valve plate, the spring (54) reverting the poppet valve head to the normally closed, seated position against fluid pressure and registering the poppet valve head within the metering orifice. An electrical circuit (56) is connected to the bimorph, the circuit providing the potential difference to the bimorph, which is regulated in accordance with an input signal delivered to the circuit. An input signal generator (58) operates in response to a sensed condition, the fluid flow in the outlet port being continuously modulated in response to the sensed condition.

The system also includes a road surface condition detector which detects a condition of a road surface on which the vehicle is running on the basis of a change of the damping force of the shock absorber. Further, the system includes a damping force adjustment correcting unit which corrects the adjustment reference value by learning the adjustment reference value on the basis of a parameter related to the damping force of the shock absorber which reflects the condition of the road surface.

A suspension control system for controlling a suspension having a shock absorber provided for a wheel of a vehicle includes a damping force detector which generates a damping force detection signal which indicates a change of a damping force of the shock absorber based on a condition of a road surface on which the vehicle is running. The system also includes a sprung resonance component extraction unit which extracts a sprung resonance component signal from the damping force detection signal. The sprung resonance component signal includes components having frequencies around a sprung resonance frequency of the shock absorber. Further, the system includes a determining part which determines whether or not the sprung resonance component signal exceeds a first level range provided for detecting a sign of the occurrence of a long-term vehicle vibration and which outputs a determination result. Moreover, the system includes a damping force controller which controls the shock absorber so that when the determining part determines that the sprung resonance component signal exceeds the first level range, the damping force of the shock absorber is altered to and maintained at an increased level and thus the suspension is maintained at a state which corresponds to the increased level and which is harder than before.

The electronic controller corrects the preset accelerations so that the damping forces of the shock absorbers will be switched over at a uniform frequency or the damping forces of the front left and rear left shock absorbers and the damping forces of the front right and rear right shock absorbers will be switched over at a constant frequency.
