A cooling system for an outboard motor having a water propulsion device and an internal combustion engine positioned in a cowling, the engine having an output shaft arranged to drive the water propulsion device, is disclosed. The cooling system includes a coolant delivery mechanism driven by the engine, the delivery mechanism arranged to deliver coolant selectively to at least one of two coolant jackets of the engine. One coolant jacket is associated with at least one combustion chamber of the engine. The other cooling jacket is associated with an exhaust manifold for that combustion chamber. The cooling system also includes at least one coolant drain line through which coolant may drain from each of the cooling jackets of the engine.

A system for controlling coolant flow in an engine includes a housing where coolant from a radiator and a bypass passage are mixed, the housing enclosing: a water pump having an impeller, a heat responding element downstream from the impeller and having a piston that extends when a temperature is above a predetermined amount, a linkage connected to the piston, and a valve upstream from the impeller and connected to the linkage so extension of the piston causes the valve to open so radiator coolant flows. A bypass valve also upstream from the impeller is connected to the linkage so extension of the piston causes adjustment of opening of the bypass valve, coolant from the bypass passage flowing when the bypass valve is open. The two valves are ganged so total flow is kept constant. A thermistor accelerates the action of the piston by quickly heating the element.

A number of embodiments of outboard motor that are comprised of a power head consisting of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine and a surrounding protective cowling. Each embodiment also includes a drive shaft housing and lower unit, the latter of which contains a propulsion device for propelling an associated watercraft. The engines are mounted within the protective cowling so their crankshafts rotate about vertically extending axes. In each case the crankshaft is coupled to a drive shaft that depends into the drive shaft housing and lower unit for driving the propulsion device. A flywheel is affixed to the upper end of the crankshaft. A first accessory drive is affixed to the crankshaft below the flywheel for driving at least one engine accessory. The engine accessory is mounted at an upper end of the engine and at least in part within the outer peripheral surface of the flywheel in top plan view. Various alternative locations for the components of the engine including specifically an alternator and a starter motor are disclosed.

A camshaft is supported for rotation about a second axis. A drive connects the timing pulley to the camshaft whereby the output shaft drives the camshaft. The engine has a generally vertically extending crankshaft having a bottom end in driving relation with the water propulsion device and a top end extending above the top end of the body of the engine, the engine including an intake system including an intake passage through which air is provided to each combustion chamber, at least one intake valve for controlling the flow through the intake passage, and an intake camshaft for actuating the intake valve(s). The engine also includes an exhaust system including an exhaust passage leading from each combustion chamber, at least one exhaust valve for controlling the flow of exhaust through the exhaust passage, and an exhaust camshaft for actuating the exhaust valve(s). The drive arrangement includes a flywheel positioned on the crankshaft adjacent the top end of the engine and a camshaft drive pulley positioned on the crankshaft above the flywheel, the camshaft drive pulley driving a first flexible transmitter which drives a driven pulley connected to at least one of the camshafts, the crankshaft further arranged to drive a second flexible transmitter which drives a pulley associated with an engine accessory such as an alternator.

The display unit, backlight unit, inverter unit, controller unit and power supply unit are disposed in a common housing. The inverter unit and the controller unit are arranged behind the backlight unit. An insulating member is further disposed between the power supply unit and the display unit at a position corresponding to a region of relatively large exothermic heat of the power supply unit, and the insulating member is disposed at a diagonal position with respect to the inverter unit. The display apparatus may be supported by a support structure including vertically tilting and laterally turning mechanisms.
