The invention relates to a coating composition comprising an acetal-functional binder and a thiol-functional cross-linker, wherein the acetal-functional binder is represented by the following formula wherein P is a binder backbone, K is a divalent and/or trivalent organic moiety having 1 to 30 carbon atoms and having one or two links to the binder backbone, A is selected from oxygen, sulphur, and NRVII, wherein RVII is hydrogen or an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, m is an integer from 1 to 50, n is an integer from 1 to 10, and R and R′ may be the same or different and represent alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms. In a further aspect, the invention relates to acetal-functional binders, acetal-functional monomers, a process for the preparation of said monomers, coating compositions comprising said acetal-functional binders, and to a process for the preparation of a coating composition comprising an acetal-functional polyurethane dispersion and a thiol-functional cross-linker.

A powder coating raw materials solution comprising as essential constituents a room temperature solid main constituent resin (A) with a curable reactive group, a room temperature solid curing agent (B) which reacts with the curable reactive group of the main constituent resin (A), and an organic solvent (C), is spray dried at a temperature at which the main constituent resin (A) and the curing agent (B) undergo no substantial curing reaction.

The present invention provides radiation curable resin compositions that contain no or essentially no volatile organic components (VOCs), and to methods of using these compositions. The radiation curable resin compositions find particular use as coating compositions. In particular, the radiation curable resin compositions of this invention comprise a vinyl dioxolane end-capped oligomer blended with a photoinitiator.

The present invention provides a curable coating composition that includes at least three components. The coating composition includes a component (a) that includes one or both of a compound (a)(1) having at least one carbamate group or terminal urea group according to the invention and having at least two linking groups that are urethane or urea or a compound (a)(2) having at least two groups selected from carbamate groups, terminal urea groups, or combinations of the two and at least four urethane or urea linking groups. The second component (b) of the coating composition includes an acrylic polymer comprising active hydrogen-containing functional groups reactive with the third component(c). Component (c) of the coating composition is a curing agent that is reactive with the first two components. Preparation of coated articles using the compositions of the invention is also disclosed.

Polyesterdiols having low viscosities of less than 3500 cps, high content of non-volatile matter in excess of 96 wt %, and narrow molecular weight distribution of less than about 1.4 are prepared by esterification of one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or ester derivatives thereof using at least a 1.5 molar excess of one or more aliphatic diols until an acid number of less than 20 is achieved, and stripping excess diol from the polyesterdiol reaction product. Where esterification catalyst is used, catalyst is substantially removed prior to stripping excess unreacted diol from polyesterdiol reaction product. The polyesterdiols so produced are useful as (i) curable components in thermosettable resin compositions, particularly compositions essentially free of volatile organic solvent and also containing a crosslinking agent and a reactive hardening agent: and/or (ii) useful as coatings, paints and adhesives, providing coatings with very low content of volatile organic compounds.

A curable coating composition is described comprising a carbamate functional material and a crosslinking agent, reactive with the carbamate group. The composition further comprises a third component that is a mixture of catalysts including a phosphorus containing acid or acid derivative and other acid catalysts. Coatings prepared with this coating composition can be cured and coated with additional coating(s), providing good intercoat adhesion to the subsequent coating.

The invention provides a method for providing a low bake repair to a cured coating, especially a composite coating and low bake repair compositions for use therein. The method of the invention involves the provision of a cured coated surface and the application of a low bake repair coating to at least a portion of the cured coated surface. The low bake repair coating of the invention has (A) a film forming component comprising (a) a first component comprising a compound having appended thereto at least one carbamate or urea functional group, or a group convertible to a carbamate or urea group, and (b) a second component comprising a compound reactive with said carbamate or urea groups on component (a), and (B) a catalyst comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of Al(ClO.sub.4).sub.2, Zr(ClO.sub.4).sub.2, and Al(NO.sub.3).sub.2. The low bake repair coating is cured at a temperature of less than 200.degree. F. for a time sufficient to cure the low bake repair coating.
