Abstract: Various surgical systems are disclosed. A surgical system comprises a hub comprising a generator; a robot comprising a tool mount; an energy tool releasably mounted to the tool mount and operably coupled to the generator; a control console; and a wireless communication path extending between the energy tool and the control console. A wired communication path extends between the energy tool and the control console. The wireless communication path is configured to transmit data indicative of a detected tissue parameter to the control console.

In various instances, the surgical instrument can include sensors and/or magnets for detecting various characteristics of the surgical instrument, surgical operation, and/or surgical site. The surgical instrument can require a temporary access code for operating and/or can be selected for connection to an external display. A surgical system can include a first modular component, a second modular component, and a feedback system. The feedback system can include an engagement sensor, which can detect the engagement and/or degree of engagement of the first modular component and the second modular component.

Abstract: An instrument control unit for use with a surgical instrument, is provided. The instrument control unit comprises first and second plates, first and second lead screws, first and second yokes, and first and second motors. The first and second plates define a sleeve therebetween. Each of the first and second lead screws is disposed between the first and second plates. Each of the first and second yokes is threadedly engaged with its respective lead screw. The motors are disposed in mechanical cooperation with respective lead screws. Actuation of the motors causes rotation of its respective lead screw, which results in movement of its respective yoke along the longitudinal axis, and which is configured to effect a first function of a surgical instrument engaged with the instrument control unit.

Abstract: A modular handheld surgical instrument including a modular handle assembly, a modular ultrasonic transducer assembly and a modular shaft assembly is disclosed. The modular handle assembly includes a shift gear translatable between a first position and a second position, wherein when the shift gear is translated to the first position, the surgical instrument is configured to rotate a drive gear of a first shaft of the modular shaft assembly to perform at least one shaft actuation function and when the shift gear is translated to the second position, the surgical instrument is configured to rotate a torque gear of a second shaft of the modular shaft assembly to controllably torque an ultrasonic waveguide of the modular shaft assembly to an ultrasonic transducer of the modular ultrasonic transducer assembly to a predefined torque.

Abstract: A wireless, remote foot controller and a wireless instrument in direct communication with one another and method of operation. The remote foot controller can determine the wireless instrument in the hand of the dental professional and can determine whether the instrument is operational in an continuously variable mode or whether the instrument is operational at discrete speeds. The remote foot controller can then respond to activation by a user to provide a predetermined signal that drives the handheld unit with the appropriate signal. The remote foot controller is activated by application of pressure to the foot controller that provides tactile, sensory feedback to the user. The foot controller includes a circuit board, antenna and battery so that it is wireless. The circuit board includes communications protocol to permit the foot controller to communicate with several dental instruments. Although the foot controller is capable of controlling multiple dental instruments, it only controls one dental instrument at a time, usually the most recent device in the hands of the dental professional.
