摘要: In an engine, associated control system, and method the engine including at least one camshaft having an angular position at a given point in time, and a crankshaft having an angular position at a given point in time. The method comprising the steps of measuring a first window of time using at least one crankshaft angular position pulse as a reference point in time and measuring a second window of time using at least one camshaft angular position pulse as a reference point in time. The method also ascertains an angular position difference between at least one camshaft and crankshaft equal to the second window of time divided by the first window of time and determines whether a misalignment between the at least one camshaft and the crankshaft exists by comparing the angular position difference between the at least one camshaft and crankshaft to a predetermined value.

摘要: An engine which employs a cam follower mechanism to reduce wear and reduce the size of an assembled engine. The cam follower mechanism utilizes guide rails located to reduce side thrust on the valve stem. The engine employs a high speed quill shaft to synchronize independent cam shafts existing in each of a plurality of interconnected engines. The engine is assembled using a single size fastener to provide a uniform stress gradient within the engine. The engines are interconnected utilizing O-ring seals. The engine provides a piston crown utilizing a connecting rod directly connected to the bottom surface of the piston crown. The piston crown is stabilized along the longitudinal cylinder axis by a rail guide. Connecting rods are provided which require less than one hundred eighty degrees (180.degree.) circumference of a crankshaft pin for support so that a plurality of connecting rods can be associated with a single crankshaft pin. A tabbed bearing fits under the plurality of connecting rods to provide lubrication between the connecting rods and the crankshaft pin. Connecting rods are held to the crankshaft pin by a circular retaining ring. The engine provides a separate cylinder head and cylinder which are attached via a circular deformable retaining band to form a metal to metal seal. The engine provides an independent lubrication system in each engine. Coolant or lubricant is provided to each engine in parallel so that the temperature of the coolant entering each engine is the same. A large diameter modular crankshaft is provided.

摘要: An apparatus for driving devices which are operated by, or "supplementary" to, a V-type internal combustion engine, having a crankshaft and overhead camshafts, includes a camshaft drive mechanism for rotatably connecting the camshafts to the crankshaft so that the camshafts are "timely" driven. A supplementary device drive mechanism rotatably connects supplementary devices independently of the overhead camshafts to the crankshaft. The crankshaft is provided with a transmission gear train for transmitting rotation of the camshafts to the camshaft drive mechanism and the supplementary device drive mechanism.

摘要: A double overhead camshaft engine has a pair of camshafts, interconnected by gearing, which are disposed in juxtaposition over a cylinder head and supported by bearings. Either one of the camshafts is coupled to a crankshaft by a timing belt. A sealing member is disposed between the engine and a front cover so as to sealingly enclose and hide the timing belt. The sealing member, in the form of a rib forming a closed loop, is divided into a plurality of rib segments, at least one of which is formed integrally with the bearing member.

摘要: A cylinder head and valve train mechanism for an internal combustion engine having six valves per cylinder. There are provided four intake valves and two exhaust valves. In some embodiments, the size of the intake valves is varied because they are served by a common port so as to insure equal flow to the cylinder through all valves. In one embodiment, a single insert forms two of the valve seats. Also, two of the four valves are disposed at acute angles to both a plane containing the cylinder bore axis and a perpendicular plane passing through this axis in many embodiments. In these embodiments, the cam lobes that operate the angularly disposed valves have cam surfaces that are inclined relative to the axis of rotation of the camshaft. In some embodiments, all of the intake valves are operated by a single camshaft. In other embodiments, two camshafts operate different pairs of the intake valves. Various bearing arrangements for the camshafts are illustrated and described.

摘要: A camshaft driving system for a DOHC engine having a pair of cylinder rows which are displaced from each other in the axial direction of the crankshaft so that a vacant space is formed in front of one of the cylinder rows and behind the other cylinder row. One of the camshafts in each cylinder row is provided with a timing pulley. The timing pulleys of the respective cylinder rows are arranged to be driven by the crankshaft of the engine by way of transmission means such as a chain or a timing belt passed around a crank pulley fixed to the crankshaft and the timing pulleys. The driving force transmitted to said one of the camshafts in each cylinder row is further transmitted to the other camshaft in each cylinder row by way of a driving force transmission means. The driving force transmission means in the rearwardly displaced cylinder row is disposed in the vacant space formed in front of the cylinder row and the driving force transmission means in the forwardly displaced cylinder row is disposed in the vacant space formed behind the cylinder row.

摘要: An improved engine construction is disclosed having a valve train including valves and corresponding valve stems for controlling the intake and exhaust ports, cams for imparting reciprocating motion to the valves by way of the valve train, and a valve spring for biasing each valve toward its closed position and the valve train into tracking relation with the cam. The only element of the valve train coupling a cam to a stem is a cam follower with a depression for receiving the corresponding stem end and a cam engaging surface opposite the depression with the cam follower being held captive intermediate the stem and cam solely by the spring biasing of the stem toward the cam and the engagement of the stem end and the depression. The spring biasing is provided by a coiled wire spring having outwardly extending legs each of which engages a corresponding stem to urge the valves toward their closed position. The bight or coiled portion of the spring is held in a relatively fixed position by a portion of the engine casting.
