The noise suppression unit includes a parameter generator configured to generate a noise suppression parameter in accordance with the gradation corrected image data by using the noise model; a parameter correction unit configured to multiply the noise suppression parameter by the gradation correction value so as to correct the noise suppression parameter; and a low-pass filter configured to vary characteristics thereof in accordance with the noise suppression parameter corrected by the parameter correction unit and to suppress noise of the gradation corrected image data.

    摘要: A method for calibrating a fly height adjustment device comprises flying a magnetic transducer coupled with a head gimbal assembly at a fly height from a magnetic recording data track. The magnetic transducer is coupled with a fly height adjustment device. Read-back signal amplitude is read from the magnetic recording data track with the magnetic transducer. The fly height is decreased with the fly height adjustment device. A linear fly height prediction is generated from the read-back signal amplitude and from power delivered to the fly height adjustment device as the fly height is decreased. The power delivered to the fly height adjustment device is compared with a difference between the linear fly height prediction and an implied fly height from the read-back signal amplitude, thereby calibrating the fly height adjustment device.

    摘要: Noise reduction is performed on the basis of characteristics of an image in a detection range. A noise reduction block 4′ performs a second-order differentiation process and a symmetry process to decide adjacent pixels with which noise reduction is preformed for an attention pixel. With the pixel level of the attention pixel in the detection range and the pixel levels of adjacent pixels used for noise reduction, an arithmetic mean processing section 16 calculates a mean value. A median filter 17 selects a median value. With the number of pixels used for noise reduction, it is determined whether the image in the detection range contains a flat portion, a ramp portion, or an edge. The mean value and the median value are weight-added with a weighted coefficient that are changed on the basis of characteristics of the image. The result is substituted for the level of the attention pixel. When the attention pixel is an isolated point, an all-pixel median filter section 31 selects a medium value of the levels of all the pixels in the detection range including the attention pixel and substitutes the median value for the level of the attention pixel.

    摘要: A method for operating a tester for testing heads and disks of a magnetic recording disk drive during manufacturing calculates the readback signal amplitude asymmetry in the frequency domain without the need for measurement in the time domain with a peak detection channel. The tester first signals the write head to write a first pattern on the disk to generate a readback signal with positive pulses. The read head then detects this first recorded pattern and sends the readback signal to a spectrum analyzer connected to the tester. The tester then signals the write head to write a second pattern on the disk to generate a readback signal with negative pulses. The read head then detects this second recorded pattern and sends the readback signal to the spectrum analyzer. The spectrum analyzer measures the amplitudes of the first and second readback signals in the frequency domain using a bandpass filter. A controller in the tester calculates readback signal amplitude asymmetry from the measured amplitudes of the first and second readback signals.

    摘要: A method for forming a hard bias structure in a magnetoresistive sensor is disclosed. A magnetoresistive sensor having a soft magnetic bias layer, spacer layer, and a magnetoresistive layer, is formed over a substrate having a gap layer. A mask is formed over a portion of the magnetoresistive sensor structure to define a central region. The masked structure is ion milled to remove portions not shielded by the mask, to form the central region with sloped sides, and to expose a region of the gap layer laterally adjacent the sloped sides. A first underlayer is deposited onto at least the sloped sides at a high deposition angle. A second underlayer is deposited to at least partially overlap the first underlayer, and at a first lower deposition angle. A hard bias layer is deposited over at least a portion of the second underlayer, and at a second lower deposition angle.
