A system and method are disclosed for operating an internal combustion engine in which the intake valves are electromechanical valves and the engine has direct fuel injection. By opening the intake valves during the intake stroke when the piston is moving at its maximum speed, the turbulence through the intake valve is enhanced, thereby increasing combustion speed, and hence combustion stability at low torque, low speed operating conditions. Furthermore, if the fuel injection interval occurs when flow of gases through the intake is highest, air-fuel mixing is improved.

Also disclosed is a cylinder cleaning cycle in which engine knock is purposely caused for one to hundreds of engine cycles by adjusting the fuel content away from alcohol toward gasoline. Further measures to cause knock which are disclosed: adjusting spark timing, intake boost, exhaust gas fraction in the cylinder, cam timing, and transmission gear ratio.

An exhaust aftertreatment device for an internal combustion engine is disclosed which contains multiple, parallel channels of a porous material, such as cordierite or silicon carbide, in which about some of the channels are plugged at an upstream end and other channels remain unplugged. In one embodiment, the substrate has an SCR coating and the engine has a urea supply system. Other embodiments include using TWC and LNT formulations. Several washcoat configurations and other specific geometries and dimensions to encourage crossflow, diffusion, and adsorption are disclosed herein.

The modified relationship is a function of engine speed and the condition has an effect on knock generation in such engine. A hysteresis load as a function of engine speed is determined and applied to the determined hysteresis load to the modified relationship to inhibit switching oscillations between a pair of the plurality of compression ratio operating modes.

A side injector sprays fuel into the depression in the piston top through a channel defined in the squish region.
