摘要: In one form, a turbocharger component, such as a compressor wheel or an impeller, formed of a cast material or a material made using a powder metal process, includes a surface having at least a portion thereof treated by a thermo-mechanical treatment process, such as friction stir processing. At the treated portion, the material forming the component includes a microstructure that is different than the microstructure of the material throughout the rest of the component. For example, in one form the material at the treated portion includes a homogenous microstructure while the material throughout the rest of the component includes a cast microstructure. In one or more forms, the treated portion exhibits at least one of increased strength, ductility and fatigue-resistant properties. In another form, a method is directed to providing components for a turbocharger which exhibit enhanced structural properties. However, other embodiments, forms and applications are also envisioned.

摘要: A process, system, and component configuration are described that discourages customer acceptance/use of will-fit, reconditioned, and counterfeit product components, by determining whether or not a serviceable product component is genuine. If a component is determined to not be genuine, then appropriate action may be taken to warn operators and document such findings. For example, one or more markers are disposed or otherwise put on the subject serviceable product component and serves as a targeted feature, and/or a particular characteristic of the filter itself is identified as the targeted feature. A sensor is used to detect the targeted feature and obtain information unique to the serviceable product component. The targeted feature(s) identifies the particular serviceable component as genuine and forms the basis for determining whether a genuine component has been installed. In some circumstances, a fluid filter product is the component that is the subject detection.

摘要: A variable pressure fuel injection system and multi-flow rate injector is provided which produces multiple fuel injection flow rates from a common source of pressurized fuel to enable reductions in emissions, combustion noise and particulates while improving fuel consumption. The present invention includes inner and outer needle valve elements biased into respective closed positions against respective valve seats for controlling the flow through corresponding sets of injection orifices. The movement of each valve is controlled by an injection control valve controlling the drain flow of control fuel from respective control volumes positioned at outer ends of the valve elements. Valve element bias spring preloads along with control flow orifices and needle valve element surface areas are selected to cause, for example, single valve operation at low fuel supply pressure and dual valve operation at high supply pressure.

摘要: In accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention, a disc-shaped contact pad of ceramic material is disposed within a recess formed in the top surface of a metal valve crosshead. The pad is held in the recess by a retainer that clips onto the crosshead. The retainer is designed to maintain only a light pressure on only a narrow shoulder of the pad to keep it seated, and does not, itself, experience any dynamic loading. Furthermore, by the provision of a circumferential clearance between the pad and both the wall of the crosshead recess and the retainer, the need for precision machining of the ceramic material can be avoided. Additionally, a reduction of frictional sliding forces imposed on the crosshead, and in turn upon the valves, by the rocker lever is achieved by the ceramic pad, so that resultant frictional side loading is not imposed on adjacent valve components to a significant extent.

摘要: A ceramic-metal composite structure which minimizes tensile ceramic loads and accommodates differences in thermal expansion characteristics between a metal member and a ceramic member without reliance on precise feature control for either member. The composite includes a mechanical retainer which allows a loose fitting relationship between the metal and ceramic members. The ceramic member is secured within a receiving bore in the metal member by the retainer in a manner which eliminates the need for precise machining of the ceramic and metal members. The metal member may be configured to accept either an internal or an external mechanical retainer element. The composite ceramic-metal structure of the present invention finds particular utility in forming a durable wear-resistant interface in internal combustion engine actuator or actuating components, such as compression brake master pistons.

摘要: A system includes an internal combustion engine receiving intake air from an intake manifold and providing exhaust gases to an exhaust manifold. The system further includes an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conduit fluidly coupling the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. The system includes a conical spring check valve disposed in the EGR conduit, the conical spring check valve having a helically wound spring including a number of turns of decreasing diameter, where each turn progresses axially in a normal flow direction of the EGR from a previous one of the turns. Each of the turns further overlaps a previous one of the turns.

摘要: An improved fuel injection system is provided which incorporates a common rail and a plurality of unit injectors which function together to efficiently produce various injection rate shapes and different combinations of discreet and blended pilot, main, post and after treatment fuel injection events during a single injection. The fuel injection system effectively permits flexible, responsively timed, square shaped, discreet low to mid pressure level injections utilizing the fuel pressure of the common rail while also allowing the unit injector portion to function independently to produce flexible and responsively timed and pressure controlled, triangular shaped high pressure fuel injection events and to recover excess energy. In one embodiment, a separate common rail pump is avoided by utilizing the unit injector plunger to replace fuel into the common rail which was previously injected.
