Abstract: Disclosed are Bisphenol A (BPA), Bisphenol F, Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), and Bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BFDGE)-free coating compositions for metal substrates including an under-coat composition containing a polyester (co)polymer, and an under-coat cross-linker; and an over-coat composition containing a poly(vinyl chloride) (co)polymer dispersed in a substantially nonaqueous carrier liquid, an over-coat cross-linker, and a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer. Also provided is a method of coating a metal substrate using the BPA, BPF, BADGE and BFDGE-free coating system to produce a hardened protective coating useful in fabricating metal storage containers. The coated substrate is particularly useful in fabricating multi-part foodstuffs storage containers with “easy-open” end closures.

Abstract: A polyester polymer is provided that includes at least one pendant phenolic-containing group. In one embodiment, the polyester polymer is combined with an optional crosslinker and an optional carrier to form a coating composition suitable for use in coating articles such as packaging articles. The coating composition typically includes a resole phenolic crosslinker. In one embodiment, the polyester polymer has at least one phenolic-containing group that comprises an adduct of cardanol.

Abstract: A one-part, storage-stable, air-dryable, latex-coatable waterborne film-forming coating composition has dispersed therein sufficient conductive material to provide an autoweldable hardened shop primer layer when applied to metal components. The thus-primed components may be welded together using automated arc welding equipment without having to remove the coating composition at the weld site. The conductive material desirably causes little or no airborne emission of unsafe quantities of heavy metals or other harmful substances when the primer is volatilized or combusted during welding.

Abstract: A coated article is disclosed that includes a metal substrate and a coating composition disposed on at least a portion of the metal substrate. The coating can be formed from a composition that includes an acrylic copolymer, which is preferably the reaction product of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and a functional monomer. The functional monomer can be the reaction product of a multifunctional isocyanate and an ethylenically unsaturated nucleophilic monomer. The functional monomer preferably includes a blocked isocyanate group. The articles can be useful for packaging foods and beverages.

Abstract: A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes an emulsion-polymerized latex copolymer having copolymer chains of one or more ethylenically-unsaturated monomers and one or more styrene offset monomers. Preferably, the coating composition is substantially free of BPA, PVC, and styrene. The method may also include curing the sprayed coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.

Abstract: A method for making a coating composition by mixing one or more latex polymers and an aliphatic epoxy resin system having an epoxy equivalent weight less than 1000 and being distinct from the one or more latex polymers to provide an aqueous first component, and providing a second component having reactive groups that can react with the one or more epoxy resins. A mixture of the first and second components provides a film-forming curable coating composition that may be used on substrates including cement, cement fiberboard, wood, metal, plastic, ceramic, glass and composites.
