A process and system for producing synthesis gas by a SPOC® enhanced catalytic partial oxidation process is disclosed. Light hydrocarbons in a H2S-containing feed gas are partially oxidized to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide over a catalyst that simultaneously oxidizes the H2S to produce elemental sulfur. A reaction in which H2S is partially oxidized to elemental sulfur and water takes place instead of a secondary reaction in which a portion of the light hydrocarbon feed is combusted to form CO2 and water. An increase in yield and selectivity for CO and H2 products results, and readily recoverable elemental sulfur is also produced.

A process for purifying a light hydrocarbon stream containing H2S is disclosed in which the selective catalytic partial oxidation of the H2S component is carried out while the hydrocarbon components slip through substantially unconverted. A catalyst that favors the partial oxidation of H2S over conversion of the hydrocarbon component of a gaseous H2S-light hydrocarbon mixture is employed. Apparatus for selectively cleaning up light hydrocarbon streams containing low concentrations (e.g., less than 25 vol. %), and apparatus for selectively cleaning up light hydrocarbon streams having higher concentrations (e.g., greater than 25 vol. %) of H2S are also disclosed.

H.sub.2 S-containing gases are desulfurized by direct catalytic oxidation of the H.sub.2 S to elementary sulfur by means of oxygen-containing gases in a tube reactor, with indirect removal of the heat of reaction by means of a coolant and with condensation of the sulfur formed, wherein either the catalyst is present in the jacket space around the tubes and the coolant is present in the tubes of the reactor or the coolant is present in the jacket space around the tubes and the catalyst is present in the tubes of the reactor, and the catalyst fills the tubes of the tube reactor or the jacket space around the tubes over the entire cross-section of the tubes or the jacket space respectively, the exit temperature of the gaseous reaction mixture leaving the tube reactor is kept at 180.degree.-400.degree. C. and the sulfur formed in the tube reactor is separated out of the reaction mixture, obtained in the reactor, in a condensation stage downstream of the reactor.

Steam containing hydrogen sulfide is purified and sulfur recovered by passing the steam through a reactor packed with activated carbon in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of oxygen which oxidizes the hydrogen sulfide to elemental sulfur which is adsorbed on the bed. The carbon can be recycled after the sulfur has been recovered by vacuum distillation, inert gas entrainment or solvent extraction. The process is suitable for the purification of steam from geothermal sources which may also contain other noncondensable gases.

The invention discloses an apparatus and process for the reformation of hydrogen containing fluids to hydrogen and other constituents, more particularly, the reformation of hydrocarbons or mixtures of hydrocarbons in a cyclic flow inert porous media reactor for the production of hydrogen and other constituents. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus and process can be used for the reformation of hydrogen sulfide to produce hydrogen and sulfur.The cyclic flow reactor comprises a reaction chamber filled with a porous media matrix containing an unconstrained reaction zone located in any portion of the reactor chamber. This reactor system employs valves to canalize the reactant mixture and product mixture during flow cycling channeling the reactant mixture through the porous media matrix, and reacting the reactant mixture. In another embodiment, the reactor system may further comprise at least one aperture along the axial length of the reactor casing to enable mounting of an external energy source and/or at least one heat exchanger to provide a source of heat transfer to the inlet pipe and outlet pipe as well as the reactant mixture and product mixtures.

Within the apparatus of the invention potential energy is converted into kinetic energy and subsequently into angular momentum by means of wave energy, for comminuting, reacting and separation of feed materials. Methods of use of the apparatus in the practice of various processes are also provided by the present invention.

The process involves contacting a gas stream of hydrogen sulfide within a contacting zone with a contacting composition comprising metal sulfide in a lower sulfided state and yielding from the contacting zone a product gas stream comprising hydrogen and a recovered contacting composition comprising metal sulfide in a higher sulfided state. The higher metal sulfide is regenerated with oxygen to yield elemental sulfur and sulfur dioxide.
