Abstract: The present invention provides a method for preparing a polyion thin film (in particular a polyion thin film with different surface morphologies) and the polyion thin film prepared by the method. The method comprises: providing a substrate, and coating a first lubricant on a surface of the substrate or on a surface of a tinfoil covered on the surface of the substrate; covering a film-forming liquid of the polyion thin film on the surface of the substrate with the first lubricant, and after coating uniformly, covering a cover plate coated with a second lubricant on the film-forming liquid; performing a polymerization reaction of ionic liquid monomers in the film-forming liquid to form a polyion thin film; and separating the polyion thin film and cleaning it to obtain the polyion thin film. The polyion thin films with different surface morphology can be prepared. The present invention further provides a detection kit.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods, compositions, kits, and devices for detecting heavy metals in dried blood (e.g., dried blood spots). For example, the present invention provides: 1) dried blood spot paper that is detectably free of heavy metals and methods of preparing such paper using organic acid; 2) dried blood extraction solutions optimized for heavy metal detection (e.g., extraction solutions containing acetic acid and/or gold); 3) methods for estimating venous blood volume from dried blood mass; and 4) kits and kit components optimized for heavy metal detection in dried blood (e.g., kits with paper detectably free of heavy metals, heavy metal free skin wipes, metal free collection case, etc.).

Abstract: A microfluidic pH-stat with a specially-is designed slide and portable device can be used for point-of-care enzyme diagnostics. The slide includes a microchamber and a substrate for the enzyme being tested. The substrate is homogenized with the sample in the microchamber to form a test volume. The microchamber includes a working microelectrode that injects current to split water in the test volume to generate hydrogen ions and/or hydroxide ions and a micro-pH-electrode to measure a pH of the test volume; the slide also includes a reference microelectrode. The device includes a processor to adjust the injected current based on the pH of the test volume and determine an activity of the enzyme based on an amount the injected current is adjusted.

Abstract: Provided is a whole-cell biosensor system with robust biocontainment for field deployment and a strong visual reporter for readouts in the deployed environment. The engineered biosensors in an encapsulated and deployable system (eBEADS) demonstrate a portable, no power living sensor for detection of environmental pollutants, e.g., 2-phenylphenol (2-PP). The whole-cell biosensor system uses bacteria engineered to detect an analyte and generate a visual colorimetric output upon being contacted with the analyte. Advantageously, the analyte is detectable with the naked eye and the whole-cell biosensor system enables analyte detection without electronics.
