Abstract: A method with associated device for exercising core muscles of a patient who must maintain core strength or rebuild it from a very low level. The device has two handles separated by a transmission bar. A first handle is provided for the caregiver to hold, with both hands, and the opposing handle is provided for the patient to hold, again with both hands. The device enables the patient to pull herself from a supine position to a sitting position as the caregiver holds it stationery or, if the patient is lacking strength, to move the device slowly away from the patient. The caregiver can stand close to the bed corners and repeat the process to enable the patient to gain strength in the oblique muscles necessary to initiate rolling on the bed. The device, when used interactively with the patient, encourages the patient and provides feedback to the caregiver regarding the patient's fatigue level.

Abstract: A personal mobility device includes a pair of rear legs and a pair of front legs pivotably connected to the rear legs via a pair of hubs. A handle, having a loop shape and including a grip portion, is slidably mounted within the pair of hubs so that the height of the grip can be adjusted. The hubs lock the front and rear legs in both an open (unfolded) and closed (folded) configuration. By sliding the handle downward through the hubs, the legs are unlocked from the open position and allowed to pivot until locked in the closed configuration. Conversely, by sliding the handle upward through the hubs, the legs are unlocked from the closed position and allowed to pivot until locked in the open configuration.

Abstract: A lower extremity mobilizer for use in rehabilitation is provided. A seat is slidably maintained upon a base, with a foot support brace being provided at an end of the base to receive the foot of a leg provided for arthrokinematic treatment. A cord and pulley system is provided between the seat and the end of the base. In use, a patient is seated with a foot received by the foot support brace. The patient provides arthrokinematic motion to his leg by pulling himself and the seat toward the end of the device having the foot support brace. The procedure is undertaken in a closed chain motion, with the foot constantly engaging the foot support brace, and is done so as a rate, timing and extent under the control of the patient.

Abstract: Described herein are methods for determining a target musculoskeletal activity cycle (MSKC) to cardiac cycle (CC) timing relationship. The method may include detecting a first characteristic of a signal responsive to a CC timing of a user that repeats at a frequency that corresponds to a heart rate of the user; detecting a second characteristic of a signal responsive to a rhythmic musculoskeletal cycle activity (MSKC) timing of the user that repeats at a frequency that corresponds to the MSKC rate of the user; determining a value representative of an actual timing relationship between the first characteristic and the second characteristic; detecting a third characteristic of a signal corresponding to a physiological metric that varies with the actual timing relationship between the first and second characteristics; and determining a target value representative of a preferred timing relationship between the first and second characteristics.

Abstract: A walking assistance device configured to permit the independent movement of an individual via simulated weight reduction is described. The device is configured to partially suspend a portion of a user's weight via a seat-lifting system, facilitating the movement of a user with experiencing difficulty walking without assistance. The system of the device preferably employs a seat, a hydraulic or electric seat-lift mechanism, a seat restraint, a frame, wheels, a brake system, and a power source. The seat-lift mechanism is configured to rise and lower the seat, enabling the user to control the percentage of weight lifted, while the feet of the user remain in partial contact with the floor. The frame forms the structure and support of the device, and is configured to move laterally via wheels on the bottom of the frame of the device.

Abstract: An acupressure apparatus includes a tub configured to receive the user's feet for acupressure treatment, an acupressure station having a pair of designated foot placing areas for facilitating accurate positioning of the feet on the acupressure station, a plurality of upward projections formed on an upper surface of the acupressure station, and a plurality of watering holes formed around the projections, and a water supply conduit connected to the bottom wall of the tub for supplying compressed water by operation of a water pump. The watering holes formed in the acupressure station are directed to acupressure points of the feet such that the compressed water delivered through the watering holes provides acupressure stimulations to the acupressure points of the feet.
