On the front surface of the contact sheet is attached an EL sheet and a shield layer is provided between the contact sheet and the EL sheet. In the EL-combined sheet switch, as described, the electromagnetic noise from the EL sheet which might otherwise affect the operation of an electronic device is blocked by the shield layer. The shield layer is preferably connected with a ground electrode formed on the circuit board.

Through an offset arrangement of the piezosensors (4) in a matrix pattern direct illumination or back lighting of the printed film (5) can be achieved, thereby improving an operator's visual recognition while permitting accurate recognition of a function by the processor (12). An input filter (15) prevents operator error due to unintentional actuation of the control unit.

The present invention is a simplified membrane keyboard employing a single flexible sheet. This membrane keyboard is employed in an electronic apparatus having an external case with a nonconducting keyboard surface. This nonconducting keyboard surface has a plurality of depressions corresponding to key switch positions. The keyboard surface is covered by a keyboard sheet. This keyboard sheet has a flexible membrane with opposed first and second surfaces, the first surface disposed adjacent to and substantially covering the keyboard surface of the external case. An interconnection pattern is placed upon the first surface of the flexible membrane. This interconnection pattern has a plurality of conductors and most particularly has a pair of conductors in proximity at each key switch position. Pressure applied to the second surface of the flexible membrane causes the flexible membrane to flex until the two conductors contact a conductive layer disposed in the bottom of the corresponding depression. This contact causes electrical conduction between the two conductors, thereby giving rise to a closed key operation. In a preferred embodiment graphic matter identifying the key areas of the flexible sheet, that is those areas overlying the depressions, is applied to the second surface of the flexible sheet. This invention is adapted for use in calculators, electronic learning aids, electronic games, small computer systems and other electronic apparatuses which employ keyboards.

A sheet-like miniaturized electronic device includes an electronic component assembly with a wiring base having switch contacts and a semiconductor IC chip operated by signals from the switch contacts. A display panel displays data according to signals from the semiconductor IC chip, and a battery supplies a drive voltage to the semiconductor IC chip. The wiring base, display panel and battery are electrically connected to one another and arranged in the same plane. An upper cover is provided in close contact with the upper side of the electronic component assembly, and has an operating section and a transparent display window. The recesses communicate with each other by means of grooves formed on the lower case, and fixed contacts are provided on the projections. A pattern is formed on the under surface of a flexible substrate put on the lower case so that movable contacts, included in the pattern, face the fixed contacts. An elastic sheet with a number of buttons is put on the flexible substrate, and the flexible substrate and the elastic sheet are fixedly held between an upper case and the lower case. When any of the buttons of the elastic sheet is pushed, the elastic sheet and the flexible substrate are elastically deformed to bring the movable contacts into contact with the fixed contacts.

A conductive adhesive for use in membrane switch and printed circuit technologies consists essentially of a resin modified copolymer of butadiene and styrene and a conductive element. The conductive element is preferably a material such as acetylene black and is more than two percent and less than 40 percent by weight of the adhesive. The conductive adhesive may be used to secure the membrane and substrate of a membrane-type switch thereby providing a conductive path between the membrane and substrate. The adhesive may also be used to attach a membrane switch tail to an associated printed circuit board or the like, again with the conductive properties of the adhesive providing a current path as well as the conventional adhesion between the two parts.
