Abstract: A catheter or the like is steerable through cavities within a body and aimable toward organs or tissue within the body. The catheter includes an elongated tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end for insertion into the body, a plurality of temperature-activated memory elements in the distal end of the tubular member, and a core for supporting the memory elements. Each memory element assumes a preset shape when heated to a predetermined temperature. A sleeve is provided to couple slidably each memory element to the core so that each memory element is permitted to slip in relation to the core and also to couple each memory element so that movement of one element results in movement of the other elements. Each memory element is moved to another shape when the memory element coupled thereto is heated to the predetermined temperature. A control system adjacent the proximal end of the tubular member allows an operator to control selectively the temperature of each temperature-activated element to deflect the distal end of the tubular member so as to either direct the course of the tubular member or to direct the distal end of the tubular member toward an organ or tissue within the body.

Abstract: The invention relates to multi-component shape memory threads, fibers, tubes, or tapes, which includes at least two shape-memory polymeric (SMP-N) components. Abstract: Cardiac tissue ablation catheters including an inflatable and flexible toroidal or spherically shaped balloon disposed at a distal region of an elongate member, a flexible circuit carried by an outer surface of the balloon, the flexible circuit including, a plurality of flexible branches conforming to the radially outer surface of the balloon, each of the plurality of flexible branches including a substrate, a conductive trace carried by the substrate, and an ablation electrode carried by the substrate, the ablation electrode in electrical communication with the conductive trace, and an elongate shaft comprising a guidewire lumen extending in the elongate member and extending from a proximal region of the inflatable balloon to distal region of the inflatable balloon and being disposed within the inflatable balloon, wherein a distal region of the elongate shaft is secured directly or indirectly to the distal region of the inflatable balloon.

Abstract: Shape memory tissue engagement elements (15) are created using shape memory alloys or shape memory (SM) composite sheets (33, 36) with one or more SM material sheets (20, 32). Arrays of the tissue engagement elements may then be inserted or molded into flexible base materials forming pads for tissue engagement. In certain embodiments, the composite sheets incorporate two SM material layers (20, 32) having differing transition temperatures to allow activation of one layer for tissue engagement and activation of the second layer for tissue release. In exemplary embodiments, insertion of interconnected tissue engagement elements (46) into a base layer (19) with slots (48) provides a completed pad array. In alternative exemplary embodiments, vacuum forming of composite sheets (51) with cutting of corrugated sides (53) to form tissue engagement elements allow production of complete arrays of tissue engagement elements. Overmolding the arrays with a flexible base material (19) provides a completed pad.
